Relationships Before and After MS: Question of the Week

  • My life has evolved just recently.  I am now an engaged woman.

    • Not engaged as in engaged to perform in a concert in downtown DC, although I am contracted to do just that next week.
    • Not engaged as in Captain Picard on the Starship Enterprise - Engage!
    • Not engaged as in engaged in conversation with plenty of other MSers online, however I do do that on a daily basis.

I’m engaged to a wonderful man who has known me since before the MS diagnosis was made official by the doctors.  We met one week before I was mentioning the odd numbness and tingling in my left arm.  That numbness/tingling spread to my spine and became accompanied by severe weakness in my hand and arm.

He dried my tears when fear was overwhelming that first year.  He noted stiffness in my calves before the nurse called it spasticity.  He encouraged me to use my cane during an excursion last summer so that we could enjoy a long walk in the mountains of Southeast Alaska.  Smart strategy.

Last weekend, he finally “popped the question.”  We are engaged!!

    This week’s question:

If you are currently in a relationship, did your spouse/partner know you before MS?  Or has your partner only known you with MS as a third wheel in the relationship?  If you are not in a relationship at the moment, does MS have anything to do with that directly or indirectly?
