By Lisa Emrich, Health Guide Tuesday, June 19, 2012
If you are a regular member of the online MS community, you have already heard the news that Jack Osbourne (son of Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne) has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.  The news was released in an interview with PEOPLE magazine on Sunday evening.   In the past 42 hours, the...

While I am sorry that Jack Osborne has been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, as I am sorry for anyone who receives this diagnosis, I think you are right, Lisa, that his celebrity might help get some attention to this somewhat neglected disease. And we can help!  Many people know little about MS, and as you wrote, this results in false information spreading aound to many people who are unfamiliar with our disease.  Each of us that has a blog, column, radio show, or other form of communicating with others, can use this example of MS not being discriminatory to share accurate information about our disease, it's causes, treatments, and cures, or lack thereof.  And, whenever possible, we can reach out to Jack Osborne to offer our support and strength in numbers, that helps us get though each day.

Hi Denise,

Watching the continued media attention devoted to discussing Jack's diagnosis this week has been fascinating.  Fortunately the conversations did go a bit deeper a few times and viewers/readers may have come away knowing just a tiny bit more about MS in the process.

There truly are 1000's of faces of MS in this world.  Jack's is one.  Yours is one.  Mine is one.  Together we begin to form a picture of this disease.

Thank you for commenting about the false information re causes of MS.  However you go on to state that those with type II Diabetes have brought the disease on themselves. This is incorrect and a very negative comment to make.  Most people who develop Type II Diabetes have the same diet and lifestyle as most of the western world and only 30% of those diagnosed are obese.  Think before you type.

Hi Bobo,

Thank you for your comment.  But I must point out that at no time did I say that persons diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes "have brought the disease on themselves."  Nor did I reference obesity at all.

What I said was, "It [developing MS] is not analogous to persons who develop Type 2 Diabetes in part because of their food and lifestyle choices."

No chronic disease has simple, singular causes.

Lisa
