Pain Medication for MS: Question of the Week

Lisa Emrich Health Guide October 16, 2012
  • Have you ever found yourself too low on medication and skimped until you could get a new prescription?  I have. This summer I had failed to get in one more refill on a prescription of gabapentin before it expired.  I found myself counting out the remaining capsules, counting the days until...

    Lisa,

Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials.  I am very happy for you!

As for the medication it's happened with one or two of my meds that I forget to take them.  I don't know how it happens but it does.  They are all counted out in my daily pill box.  But I forget anyway.

    Lisa,

Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials.  I am very happy for you!

As far as ordering the medication, I'm pretty proud of myself that I never ran out.  One time my pharmacist called me late at night because one of her customers ran out and she wanted to know whether I could give her a few of my pills and she'd replace mine ASAP (the pharmacy had run out).  So, you can see forgetting to re-order is not an unusual thing!

Best to you and your new hubby!

    Cathy

First, I hope you had a beau tiful wedding. I'm sure it was from your perspective. Of course I offer felicitations.

    Now to the meds --

I always tried to keep ahead on meds, especially for my facial pain. However, I had a pharmacy that kept track of how many pills I had, and would not let me get ahead - at all. It made me nervous around long week-ends....

My doctor had a little chat with them and they loosened up, just a little, but enough so I could relax. We know they don't all count so closely, but maybe they should. And then, what about vacations?

Lisa, I have been taking the maximum allowed narcotics by law for years now: morphine, percocet, flexeril, and fentanyl. Lisa, I have been taking the maximum allowed narcotics by law for years now: morphine, percocet, flexeril, and fentanyl. Then I started experiencing more pain in my feet and legs and was given gabapentin (what a miracle-it slashed that pain a great deal). I have been experimenting with the dosages with my doc's permission of course and pushing the pain envelope as far as I dared. I would go several days between patches (fentanyl) and when I reached 5 days without any real difference in my pain level, I threw it away. My doc was very happy and proud of me, especially since I didn't tell him. I am still experimenting with the rest, but since I am never without pain, it is hard to judge the efficacy of each med. I had no withdrawals at all-in fact I have had days where I did not take my pain meds but was able to function somewhat and without withdrawals symptoms. I hope to be able to get my meds down to once or twice a day. Doc gave me guidelines to follow so I would not accidentally overdose or anything. It is just a matter of finding different ways to cope with the pain - I can cope much better than say 5 years ago. It can be done! I will survive and conquer! Good luck out there! Blessings to all!

      2. My dear friend Sherry, I hadn't noticed the screne-name bef0re I started reading, but I knew it was you by the end of the first sentence ;-). I totally agreemwith what you say about pain meds. I try to cut back on my Lyrica - my fear of wt-gain, but when the TN is acting up,like the last 2 months, it's the pain or me. I've decided not to suffer and act like a stupid hero.
