Life Insurance

By karen Friday, May 28, 2010

Im confused.... I have read that MS does not shorten my life span, but when I tried to get life insurance I was denied because I have MS. Does anyone understand this? Have you had a problem getting life insurance too?

I haven't tried to apply for life insurance, basically because no one is dependent upon my financial contributions.  The NMSS has this to say about applying for life insurance and recommend that you call your local chapter for recommendations on insurance agents in your area.

I read these excellent recommendations on a different website:

  • Find out which life insurance companies are familiar with Multiple Sclerosis and may offer the lowest premiums.
  • Consider decreasing your life insurance policies face amount so you are more likely to be accepted
  • Apply for life insurance when your Multiple Sclerosis is in remission. Your insurability improves after longer periods of good health.
  • Have regular physicals and doctor checkups. People with regular medical supervision may be rated higher, especially if there are good remarks in the doctors notes.
  • Keep or get a job that offers group life insurance. An applicant's ability to maintain the same job is also an important factor in obtaining individual life insurance.
  • Avoid smoking of any other dependencies, that will just compound your un-insurability
  • Find out if your doctor is able to communicate with the underwriting department of the life insurance company. He might be able to eliminate an outright rejection.

On another website discussing life insurance underwriting I read this:

The rating for MS depends on how long ago the diagnosis was made and the degree of disability. No symptoms or disability, one year or more after diagnosis may be Table B or C. Moderate disability, but able to walk may be Table D to F. More severe disability may be Table H or higher, or even uninsurable.

Keep trying.  The premiums may be higher, but folks with MS who have less disability and are in excellent health should be able to obtain life insurance.

Hi Karen

I can totally relate to your life insurance denial experience.  In fact, I have recently been denied by several life insurance companies for whole life policies.  I have been advised to consider term insurance (which I have done.)  I also decided to make my benefit amount reasonable to cover my final expenses and to find Other investment vehicles if I want to leave a legacy to my family.  This idea is working for me.

That is actually a great idea. I think I may take your advice. Just so noone is stuck with paying for my funeral and all that I will be satisfied. thanks

i got a thing in the mail from mutual of omaha offering me whole life. i called them and they said they didn't care about the ms--it's only $10,000 for $37.50 a month but it might help the kids bury me someday. good luck. djax59

Thanks for the advice. I may look into this if I dont take tellenhelens advice about just saving for my after expenses. I think the worst thing was getting denied and thinking "what do they think im going to die early or what???"

we know we're not going to kick off tomorrow unless we walk out in front of a truck but it is hard to convince anyone else. if you can save you're doing better than i. the way things are going i'd vote for te mason jar under the matress-lol

Didn't have trouble getting it from State Farm but a little more expensive.  Not too bad though.

When I applied at many places and finally paying triple rates for my life insurance, I pressed the question as to: "Why so high"?  I am after all fairly active and have been remission free since 2001.  I consider MS pretty light in my case compared to others.  MS, I was told, has a higher percentage of suicides than the normal healthy population.  I don't know if this is true or not, maybe someone can refute this for me, but I could not.

hmmm that is interesting. I have heard of a higher suicide rate but I didnt think life insurance pays in a case of suicide. I dont know?? great question. anybody know the answer???

Read this site and understand why their rates are higher...when you can get them.
