Im confused.... I have read that MS does not shorten my life span, but when I tried to get life insurance I was denied because I have MS. Does anyone understand this? Have you had a problem getting life insurance too?

Hi Karen
I can totally relate to your life insurance denial experience. In fact, I have recently been denied by several life insurance companies for whole life policies. I have been advised to consider term insurance (which I have done.) I also decided to make my benefit amount reasonable to cover my final expenses and to find Other investment vehicles if I want to leave a legacy to my family. This idea is working for me.
When I applied at many places and finally paying triple rates for my life insurance, I pressed the question as to: "Why so high"? I am after all fairly active and have been remission free since 2001. I consider MS pretty light in my case compared to others. MS, I was told, has a higher percentage of suicides than the normal healthy population. I don't know if this is true or not, maybe someone can refute this for me, but I could not.

Read this site and understand why their rates are higher...when you can get them.
I haven't tried to apply for life insurance, basically because no one is dependent upon my financial contributions. The NMSS has this to say about applying for life insurance and recommend that you call your local chapter for recommendations on insurance agents in your area.
I read these excellent recommendations on a different website:
On another website discussing life insurance underwriting I read this:
The rating for MS depends on how long ago the diagnosis was made and the degree of disability. No symptoms or disability, one year or more after diagnosis may be Table B or C. Moderate disability, but able to walk may be Table D to F. More severe disability may be Table H or higher, or even uninsurable.
Keep trying. The premiums may be higher, but folks with MS who have less disability and are in excellent health should be able to obtain life insurance.
Thanks for the good advice. Its so great to beable to ask others who know what im talking about MS questions.
