Possible gout

By AGSerra1 Wednesday, August 24, 2011

I have been experiencing pain and swelling in my pinky toe for two weeks now .. it didn't start there though it started back in July under my big toe and went across .. i cannot say i had severe pain in my big toe as it is somewhat numb ..

I also have been having severe pain in my left hip that by morning I am in such pain and numblike yet burning at the same time .. this goes on down to my foot .. on the left side and no arthitis or anything showed up on xrays so we assumed it was muscular ..

but back to this pain in my right foot .. the pain was severe at first on the joint under my big toe and it sorta subsided but still throbs every now and then , all of a sudden my pinky toe blew up twice the size and it burns ..

I am seeing my Internist and let her check for gout .. iI do not drink , eat shellfish or any of that stuff other than enjoy a good steak but just wondering if until I do see the doctor if there is any temporary relief ..

It is sore but massaging helps , it gets too cold and really irks me so if anyone has any suggestions in the meantime please jump on in .. thanks

Hi AGSerra1,

First of all, I'm so sorry that your post went so long without any responses. I was out of town at the time you posted and missed this one.  My sincere apologies.

Have you found out if this joint swelling/pain is gout or not?  When some of my joint swelled to double their size, it was a pre-diagnosis attack of rheumatoid arthritis.  Bone erosion didn't show up on x-rays, but did appear on ultrasound exam.  Not all rheumatologists use ultrasound in their offices.

So how are you doing now 2 months later?

Lisa - thank you for asking .. I am heading to Naples, FL next week to see my rheumo .. the toe is still quite swollen and burns but since writing my spouse had a stroke and we have been handling his issues as well as mine ..

It's been a fine line of integrating my care with his now we both have the same Internist and I get my thyroid scanned in the morning as well .. lol .. have o laugh about it as if not for my sense of humor I would probably not have stayed so calm ..

Again, thank you for answering me and I will be getting all issues cleared up shortly .. Adrian
