My MS Management Dilemna

By tellnhelen Thursday, January 20, 2011

Hello Friends.  Happy New Year.

First  I have some news.   I start Tysabri tomorrow.  I'm excited.  I'm a little scared too.  I'll be happy if the med results in the positive outcomes I've read about.  If not, then I had to try.  Still trying to get back to walking with a cane rather than a walker.  Still exercising as much as I can stand...hurting most of the time now.

There seems to be a lot of medicine we can take to manage symptoms.  I don't take them because I just don't want to relie on drugs to feel normal....but how does that (normal) feel?

For me if I can deal with the pain and fatigue without medicine then maybe I don't want to know how it feels to take it...For example, the first time I had IV steriods, I felt great....until the med wore off.  Then I came crashing down.  I decided that I would only take steriods if it was necessary for mobility.  I kinda feel this way about all that other stuff too....I'll take if I just can't do without it.  In the meantime, I'll exercise, take vitamins, pay attention to my diet and drink alkaline water (An alkaline body functions better)

So I wanted to ask this group  What do you think?  Is it better to go without symptom management medicines? or Is it better to relie on them to feel better (normal)/

Hi Helen,

Wow, so exciting about the Tysabri.  I truly hope that it works for you!!

Regarding medications for symptom management, I personally incorporate them with non-medication strategies.  Over time, I have found that my needs for symptom meds has changed a lot.  I don't need or take nearly as much as I did at one time.  My body seems to have stepped up and helped itself.

I can't say what "normal" feels like, but I will say that I don't like to suffer with symptoms that can be helped by any means.

Please let us know how your Tysabri infusion goes.  Fingers crossed for you.
