Does this sound anything like MS?

By Jen Wednesday, April 22, 2009

I am a 34y female that has been having numbness(mostly in toes)left eye pain that usually turns into migranes, muscle spasms (alot are small and painless all over my body, but I have had 2 episodes of what felt like my muscles around my chest and back were trying to squeeze me to death, at the time i thought i was having a heart attack(normal ekg) but afterward the pain stopped I  realized it felt more like muscles than my heart) I have been having alot of memory problems and trouble stopping in middle of a conversation and forgetting what I was talking about.Does this sound anything like ms because the sx i read here sound so much worse and a little different like my spasms happen all over not just in legs and arms? Trying to figure out if I am making too much of things? I went to the dr for a physical and he did a mri of my neck (haven't got results yet) and has scheduled 2 nerve conductions thinking it may be a pinched nerve. Would either of these show him anything to make him do other tests if it was MS? I didn't tell him ALL my sx because of time and I didn't want him to think I was just crazy! Thanks for listening...sorry I ask so many questions!

hi

do you get any other symtoms?, you could get  your dr do a vitamin d test, also a mri on your spine to see if there are any lessions showing.

As strange as it seems, for the first time I now have leg numbness from the bottom of both of my knees to the top of my ankles that started last night and I can barely pick my right foot up...but I do want to say it started after I went for a 15 min walk, when I stopped it felt like popcorn popping in my legs then the numbness so it may be totally unrelated. What would the vitamin D test show?

I forgot to mention the reason I went to the dr to begin with was the unreasonable fatigue I have (but this too is something that can be just about anything).

Hi Jen,

Please don't apologize for asking questions.  That's why we're here.  You might want to read this post for starters - Beginner's Guide to MS: Do I have MS? What does it take to get diagnosed with MS?

Symptoms of MS are not always the worst possible.  Many times they are quite subtle.  It's a good start that you've already had an MRI of your neck.  Although your doctor was probably looking for pinched nerve issues or joint degeneration, it still is possible to see spinal cord lesions if there are any present.

Your description of the "popping" in your legs after walking for 15 minutes sounds VERY familiar.  As the sensation went away, did it resolve from your knee then moving down to your toes?  When that feeling occurs with me, it is my toes which are the last to feel "normal" again.

Basically, the results of the MRI is what you need to know next.  Call the MRI center (or hospital) where you had the MRI done and ask for a copy of the report and a CD of the images.  These are good for you to have.

Thank you so much for your response..I ran into a wall it seems..the dr that I went to that set up all the tests had to go over seas unexpectantly and won't be back for a few months they say. So they cancelled my 2 nerve conduction tests and my follow up visit. I said I wanted to come pick up my records since I have not got a chance to go over what anything said (bloodwork or the MRI) but I will have no clue what I'm looking at once I get them so now I don't know what to do. Insurance won't pay for another physical to another dr. and I am worried it is too soon to try to see a neurologist. If I wait on him I could be waiting until Aug or Sept and thats if he comes home when they "think" he will be back. If anyone has any suggestions I welcome them. I have not even told my husband that I am worried about this or even to the extent of my sx even though he has noticed the most recent on his own but I don't want to worry him if there isn't even anything to worry about.

Thanks again, Jen

Jen,

My name is Candy Lee, I have had MS for iover 20 years. I have had many of the same symptoms that you have described. Although nothing to the point of a heart attack.

I have had symptoms that seem as though I have a tight band around my midrift, from my brest down to my stomach. At times so bad that I could not stand to have clothes touching me.

I have had numbness in most areas of my face, even with the roof of my mouth being numb. I know it sounds weird, but true. I have had numbness on the entire left side of my body, including not seeing out of my left eye, not hearing out of left ear, and no feeling in any part of my left side.

These extreme bad symptoms have happened during an exerbation.

I hope this helps a littler bit. Good luck with your doctor and the results from your test.

Candy Lee
