Hello all I need help in determining how to choose a neurologist that has an MS background. I was dx'd with RR MS in February of this year, 2007.  To say I was relieved is an understatement. The words Multiple Sclerosis were bounced around a few times, for over eight years, du...

Hi imagyne - this is the place for questions like yours. My belief is if you are not comfortable with the treatment or answers from whatever doctor you speak with then find one you can feel comfortable with.

My nuerologist recommended a rhuemotologist for most of my pain issues .. and the one he recommended ws brilliant. She was very knowledgable about MS and even though it is a muscle issue and not joint , she treated me with the same respect as her other patients, if not better.

Yes, restlessness in your legs and arms or wherever the tingling , spasmatic episodes are happening there are products for.

So if your family physician won't assess or give you a better answer than the neurologist , maybe you can get the name of a good rhuemotologist that handles people with MS. They are out there and as it is said, you may not want to keep all your eggs in one basket .. having 3 well informed doctors who will work as a team are out there. Just keep going, learning and ask those questions.

    Imagyne,

Might I suggest yor local National MS Chapter. I just went online and found 3 chapters for FL depending on where you live. Given my involvement with them, I may be prejudice, but I think it might be a good start. I know my chapter here in DC keeps a list of doctors, not just neurologists I think so they might be a good resource. Given that your diagnosis is recent, I am not sure if you have connected with them or any other people living with it that can make any suggestions. Since I have been living with it for 10 yrs now, I kinda know alot of the names that many people with MS see. So if you know anyone in a similar position, ask them who they see. Lastly, this website has a place to find doctors so you may be able to find someone who specializes in MS there as well.

I was seeing the doctor who diagnosed me back in 97 until recently when he retired. He was a neurology generalist so he had patients with all kinds of neurological problems. But I was comfortable with him and I knew if he ever had a problem with my case, the MS specialist was in the office right next door to his. When he retired, I started seeing the MS specialist and I like him, still getting used to him though.

    Good luck in your pursuit.

    Kristin
