Hi. I'm Mandy, a 48-year old woman, married to a wonderful man, living in small-town Virginia. Since January of 2004, it is part of my bio to also include that I...make that we...are living with the daily effects of multiple sclerosis. I cannot avoid including that fact when describing myself....

I guess it's only right that I get to leave your first comment. After all, I am your husband.

Congratulations on your new column, your first post, and the beginnings of realizing one of your dreams. I'm very proud of you -- and I love you.

Thanks for your post.  I was just diagnosed this week and have been on the web immersing myself in research.  I am most frightened of how this is going to affect my marriage.  I had my first attack in 2003

but life was so hectic that I didn't follow up with the doctors etc like I should have.  my husband doesn't seem to understand that it really wouldn't have changed much.  This recent attack has been ongoing for three months- I had to quit my job because of the overwhelming fatigue- I actually fell asleep while driving twice during my commute.  Neuros thought I had a sleep disorder but then when I described other symptoms and that I had felt like this before they ordered an MRI which showed multiple lesions.  I go back on the 23rd to discuss treatments and am scheduled to have an MRI of my spine next week.  Just feeling overwhelmed and your post really made me feel better.  Thanks!!

    Melissa,

I thoroughly understand what you are going through.  We have quite a lot in common.  I had my first attack in 2003 too, but was diagnosed within six months.  Fatigue is my biggest enemy as well and I also had to scale down to a part-time job.

Please, Please, Please...whatever you do, don't carry this burden alone.  Reach out to others as you have done tonight.  Whatever crazy symptoms you are experiencing, you'll find that you have company.

Give your husband time to take it all in and make sure that he is educated on the subject as well. This will effect his life as much as it effects yours, although in a different manner.

Continue doing exactly what you are doing right now -- research and learn and become your own best advocate.  It's a tough road but you are most definitely not alone.  We're all in this together.

Please let us know how you're doing...we care.
