Detective Ferguson climbs tentatively to the top of the step-ladder. Nervous and perspiring, he is completely overwhelmed when he reaches the third step. His fear of heights manifests itself in the form of dizziness and he collapses in a near-faint. Alfred Hitchcock's 1958 classic thriller, &ldqu...

Hi Mandy,

I have to say this sounds just awful. I wonder if this happened to me when I was in the hospital after my third baby?  When it comes, does it always happen over and over like it did for you - over several weeks?  Or can it be a one time thing?  It only happened once to me but it is making me wonder.

Here is a definition from our HealthCentral.com Encyclopedia: Diseases and Conditions

Thanks and all the best, sue (moderator)

Sue,

It is awful, but for me it was never again as frightening as the first time, when I didn't know what was wrong with me. Once you understand what you're dealing with, you can logically take steps to ease symptoms, knowing that your life is not in danger. It is something which surfaces periodically with me, but I have a feeling that it manifests itself differently in others.

My first episode of vertigo was the strongest and it lasted for seven (seemingly endless) hours. It was less severe when I sat still in a recliner without moving my head.

Subsequent episodes have been much shorter, from a few brief moments to several hours. It has been much easier to handle once I understood what it was and what to do about it.

It doesn't bother me very often, so I do not take perscription meds for vertigo. I do take dramamine as needed, but it has a rather limited effect.

Are you having trouble with vertigo?

Such a condition arises when there is a dysfunctional semi-circular canal called the endolymphatic sac that is present in the inner ear. It could also lead to a subsequent loss of hearing that could end up being permanent in nature.

Thanks

This is an even more difficult case of vertigo and is tough to treat. The exact cause of the disease is not yet known. The only thing known is that the disorder is a result of imbalance of the inner-ear fluids. This is what is known to cause for the symptoms of vertigo. There is no exact known cure for Meniere's disease. You could treat the fluid balance by shifting to a diet that is low on salt or by inducing a diuretic into your routine. There are several medications available that might help in the prevention of or to relieve the symptoms of vertigo. Surgical procedures for vertigo treatment in these cases are also available

Isuffere from neck pain and dizziness in the daytime. Is this a symton of MS?

8/ 6/11 6:16pm

I have the exact same problem and have had it for more than 10 years.  It use to only happen once year always during late July,  but recently it has happened more and more.  I have been having it every night for the past five nights.  Even when the initial attack of vertigo goes away I always feel horrible for the rest of the day and have to avoid moving my head quickly.

The doctor I am currently seeing says its all due to anxiety, but anti-anxiety meds have made no difference.  I have missed many days of work because of this  but my doctor won't sign for fmla. It has become hell for me and may even cost me my well paying job.

It is nice though to know I am not the only one in the world with this problem.
