MS and Choosing to Eat a Healthy Diet

By Mandy Crest, Health Guide Monday, April 14, 2008
It is not a diet. It is a dietary lifestyle. Several years ago, my husband, Jake, and I set out to improve our eating habits. We reached back to our childhood lessons in the basic food groups and did some additional research. We decided to eliminate as much refined sugar and white flour as possible, ...

Thanks Mandy.  As I sit here drinking a coke and eating veggie chips, my mind has wander into the fridge remembering I have cottage cheese and yogurt in there.  UGH.

Some may want to check out the dietary factors we outline in out lifestyle changes section.

As well you may want to see our sister site's materials at MyDietExercise.com

This sounds like a change many of us should make in all of our lives.  Thanks for sharing.

Mandy,

Thanks for your post. I litally heard almost the same thing from a dietician the other night at my support group meeting. A few things she suggested (although none are "proven" that I had not heard but will be looking into at the next big grocery store spree, is Flaxseed. One of the other women at the meeting said she uses it in her pancakes all the time.

I wish I could switch to better eating habits. I am better than I used to be but it is a slower process. I wish I had strength to do what you and Jake did. But I have two young kids who get exposed to lots of things that I need to work around. I believe in moderation - we go to Old McDonalds maybe 2x a year. I said that to another mom and she said they go 1x a week almost, so I feel like I am being good.

One thing that the dietician said was that if I can't give up red meat (which I like a lot), go for the loins - pork loin, sirloin. They are the leanest cuts. So that will be my switch for now. That and the Flaxseed. A little at a time :-).

It IS difficult in today's "fast food" world to make the change, especially with little ones in the house. My theory is that baby steps are better than no steps! Thanks for your insight into such a basic, but important health issue.
