Improving Exercise Habits to Help with Multiple Sclerosis

By Mandy Crest, Health Guide Tuesday, April 22, 2008
There is no cure for the multiple sclerosis that ails us, but there are many things we can do to keep ourselves as healthy as possible, in order to maintain a good quality of life. In previous posts, I've discussed some of the things I do to accomplish this. I have a great track record when it comes ...

Hello Mandy,

I'm willing to try and get motivated and exercise more.  I'm interested in strength training to keep my muscles in good shape.  My left side is weaker and I really do need to do something about it.  It's just that darn "ms fatigue", plus my 3 kids, my house, and my part time work at home job.  I'll try to squeeze exercise in somewhere, and keep you updated.

Wonderful! Let's keep each other updated and see how we do. It is not going to be easy, but it might help that we are doing this "together."

Any other takers?     Cool

Here's a Viniyoga DVD I'd recommend. There's a great explanation, intro & even some video clips from it to get you even more enthused about it!

I can't guarentee you'll not push stop & eject but... I can recommend this one for yoga newbies and MSers who are adventurous and curious about yoga.

I'll jump in and commit to doing yoga 3X a week as a group commitment and we can all report here with questions, woes, concerns or even elations about moving forward empowering ourselves together thru yoga...

Any takers???

One of the first things I did after my diagnosis was to shed 30 pounds down to a healthy weight and BMI, this also lowered my cholesterol and so many other wonderful things. I did this by counting calories and avoiding those transfats-you HAVE to read the ingredients, as the nutritional labels don't list 'trace' amounts. High fructose corn syrup and anything preceded with "partially hydrogenated" was off of my list. And exercise... I noticed the fatigue get worse after my initial optic neuritis relapse, so I thought, "this will be interesting since I barely have energy during the day.". BUT, I found that the energy expended in exercising was returned two fold. So weird, but true! I did cardio and weights. I read up on MS, and read that Yoga was an excellent exercise incorporating balance, core strength, toning and relaxation. I always thought yoga was nothing more than meditation, but tried it out to say I did. Well, that article was spot on! Well, I definitely knew the day after where my "core" was and the fact that it was completely out.of.shape. I did hot yoga twice a week for months and not only did I see improvements in my balance and relaxation, I slept better, I was able to move better (flexibility and stretching also very much a part of Yoga), and I had more energy. One of the things that really tickled me senseless was it accelerated my weight loss and toned my core at the same time. Yoga was not meditation, it was a workout, that seemed easy at first, but then snuck up behind you and gave you a swift kick in the pants. I HIGHLY recommend incorporating yoga into your routine. Right before bedtime especially, the relaxation at the end just gets you ready for dreamland.
