Now is the time in which we MUST NOT become complacent. We must clearly express our needs and demand that our government leaders listen. When someone is forced to lay down and accept Social Security Disability in order to gain access to Medicare (which has lousy drug coverage) just to maintain access to medical care, it is not healthy for our society at large.
I am constantly amazed at the number of persons living with MS who go on SSDI so quickly after diagnosis for the reason that they could not dependably work a 40-hr week job. If I'd been working a 'regular' job, that might have been me too. But I was already out in the self-employed, individual health market where I fight within the system to stay independent and self-sufficient.
Let's keep pushing for health care reform. Let's keep educating others on the need AND what they can do to help. Let's keep supporting each other (all patients) to stay strong.
Thank you and Happy New Year!
