To deny the existence of a health care crisis at this point would be folly. The system is in disarray and we're awash in a sea red tape. It’s more complicated than it needs to be and it is less accessible than it should be. People are hurting.
In 1992, Bill Clinton was swept into office with the promise of change. Health care reform was at the top of his agenda, but our nation was not yet ready to act.
In 2009, we are eager and willing for a major overhaul of our health care system as Barack Obama takes the reins. I am full of optimism that we will finally begin, but it's going to be a long and bumpy road.
Earlier this month, I wrote a post called, “Open Letter to Barack Obama” on Health Care Reform. I did so because I believe it is helpful to read individual stories of health care run amok. To speak vaguely about a “health care crisis” just doesn't cut it. We need to make it personal. We need to provide details.
Mr. Obama has personally experienced some of the same issues many of us face. He watched his mother battle with her insurance company even as she was battling for her very life. Michelle Obama's father struggled with our nemesis, multiple sclerosis. First-hand knowledge is a very powerful thing.
The current state of the economy has pushed health care reform down a peg or two in the headlines, but it must be addressed as part of our overall economic recovery.
What if we could sit around a table with Barack Obama? What would we say to him about life with multiple sclerosis? About our health insurance... or lack of same. What changes would we request?
* group health insurance available outside of the workplace
* pre-existing condition coverage
* portable coverage
* get the insurance companies out from between patients and doctors
* address “right of conscience” rule
* access to the same coverage as federal employees... and members of congress
* more options
These might be some items on our agenda. I'm sure you have many more to add.
Well, it's a nice dream, but we're not going to sit around a table with the president-elect. So let's use this forum as if we were.
Add your voice to the chorus. Create your own sharepost... leave comments... send emails... Are you satisfied with the current health care system? If so, why? If not, why not? What improvements would you like to see? What's working and what's not? Here's your chance to sound off.
Dear President-elect Obama...
Also visit Change.Gov, where you can tell your story. President-elect Obama says he wants to hear from us. Let's take him at his word.
