Take a Look at Some Multiple Sclerosis Symptoms

By Merely Me, Health Guide Wednesday, October 22, 2008
The following video was created to show you what Multiple Sclerosis symptoms can look like. In this short film I will show the particular symptom which led me to seek guidance from a doctor in the first place. Just wanted to remind the viewer, however, that everyone's MS is different and symptoms a...

Thank you so much for sharing that video. Hopefully it will help some of the people out there that may still be wondering about symptoms.

Oh good...I am glad it was helpful.  It was a little hard emotionally for me to show this but hey...if it helps...I will do it.  Thank you so much for viewing and commenting.

This was very effective, and although I wish you did not have to suffer this symptom, thank you for sharing with us what it means and looks like.  I noticed you said that you awoke with this feeling (I think that is how you put it).   I was wondering if you are able to tell ahead of time when you are going to be affected with this, or other symptoms.

Thanks

You ask such a good question here.  I should write a post about it sometime.  I do have warning that some MS symptoms may be coming whenever I feel nauseated or else have some visual disturbance like seeing zig-zaggy lines or flashing lights.  It is almost like what folk with epilepsy have...an aura.  Other times I get very nervous for no reason...the adrenaline is pumping and then I lose my balance and gait.

The mind sure is mysterious.

Thank you so very much for viewing and for your comment.

Awww thanks.  It was a very beautiful day that day...very warm and sunny.  Things have changed since then.  Thanks for stopping by!

Why, unless it was to keep your balance, did your foot slam down so hard at the beginning? Was that part of the demonstation, or did you see a bug? :)

Is that a symptom separate from the balance issue?

LOL no bug.  Nah that is just part of my gait when I am like that.  I call it my Frankenstein walk.  Truly graceful am I.  Smile

You certainly are graceful, I think.  A heck of a writer and personality too!

My mom has the same issue dizzyiness and with her gait (she has had MS for over 30 years now)--her doctor calls that move "chicken leg." I don't know why that term exactly. It seems to be a pretty universal adaptation to attempting to keep upright and on your feet while dizzy.

Merely: Thank you for putting yourself out there as a demonstration. That takes a lot of courage. I appreciate seeing how this symptom affects you and what it looks like. My weakness isn't as noticeable but, after watching you, I tried to walk a line and realized it was more difficult than I expected. It's why I now walk with a wider gait (which probably looks a little strange).

I look forward to seeing more of your videos and want you to know how much they are appreciated!

Awww thanks Julie.  Yeah thank goodness I don't have that symptom all the time.  It sure does look weird.  LOL  I have many other silly walks to show you if I get my courage up to do so!

4/23/09 11:45am

I think you are so brave and wonderful at the same time for posting that on here for all of us to see.  You brought tears to my eye.  I am only 31 years old but with this NASTY MS I feel alot older.  Its makes me so sad what this diesease does to us, its just not fair.  I also tried to do the straight line and was able to go about 2 steps and would stumble as well......Thank you so much.....

10/23/08 10:23am

Thanks for posting that video, Merely Me! I love your blog and now to get to see you in person is a treat. Isn't it weird how you can be sitting still and forget you have MS but you get up and  try to move and you are reminded right away?

I have had the dizziness symptom before and nothing seemed to help but time. Mine wasn't a spinning feeling so much as a leaning...like as if I were on the set of the old Batman show on TV (you're too young for that and I just dated myself. Dang!)

Anyway, hope you feel better soon! Thanks for a video peek into your world. If I looked that good I might do a video too. Don't be looking for one any time soon. LOL

Well shuckaroo!  Thank you!  It is true...when sitting I can usually hide my MS...but walking...forget it.  I am "tickled pink" that you stopped by!  I hope you come again to see me here.  It is a really nice MS community here.

MerelyMe,

Thanks for putting yourself out to the world to show us MSers what this particular symptom can look like.  It's one thing to hear/read about it, it's entirely another thing to see it.

Do you find that any certain thing sets off this symptom?  Increased activity?

Take care,

Abby

Hey thanks so much Abby!  This is an excellent question you pose.  I wish I did know the triggers.  I just kinda woke up that way.  I feel weird and disoriented...sometimes I have an aura of feeling nauseated or experiencing a visual disturbance...and then the MS comes on strong.

How about for you?  Do certain things set off your MS?

My latest post, titled "My Life on a Surfboard" went up this afternoon. I had not seen your video yet, and coincidentally, I also used the example of the heel to toe test. Now that I've seen your video, I am amazed at the timing of our posts!

Just goes to show, once again, how much we all have in common!

Oh wow!  I am ashamed to say I have not yet read your post...but I will skidaddle over there now to read.  It is like we are riding a surfboard!  or a runaway skateboard.  Thank you so much for reading me and commenting.  I hold you in very high esteem for all your many contributions to your fellow MSers.  A big congrats on the Washington Post article.

Seriously, aren't you truly something!  Truly.  Your direct approach.  Your calm voice.  Your balance is the only thing off about you, that's all I can say!  You have a wonderful gift of communication, my friend. And, if this doesn't make me sound like your grandmother:  you are cute as a button, too!  Well, I am old enough to be your grannie.

You are so kind and dear to me.  I can't thank you enough for coming by to comment.  I know I have been a lackluster friend lately.  I will stop by soon to see what you are up to.  Thank you!

Oh hey there...yeah the being off balance seems to be more common that you think.  It was my big symptom before I was diagnosed.  As for the advice on the shots...it may have been either Lisa or Mandi who helped you.  I am so glad that we can be of assistance to you here on Health Central.

Well...not so much for me really.  It is just part of this disease.  Everybody has something to contend with.  Being off balance is...in the scheme of things...small potatoes.  I love that you came by to comment...please come again!

What an excellent idea to put yourself on video rather than people just reading words.

For some of your peers, so much better for them to see and be able to identify-with, rather than having to read and wonder....

A BIG HIGH FIVE for you and your editors, from South Florida...

I appreciate your comment so much Margaret!  I think it does help to see some of these symptoms visually as opposed to just talking about them.  I feel for you with all your surgeries.  Let us know how you are doing.  Thank you for your comment!

Hi I just want to thank you for taking the time to post this video,

it has actually given me something to relate to as I have personally been experiencing bizarre walking or gait difficulty similar to what you have demonstrated. I haven't been able to find anything on the internet that would like similar to what I have been experienceing....I am currently seeing a neurologist who one minute says he doesn't think I have MS and than he does...I am so frustrated ...I have had some MRI's that don't show enough evidence to be able to definately diagnose me with MS...I have had the gait problem for 1 year now...I have had several other symptoms that one minute could look like MS and some times not so sure...The neurologist is sending me to another specialist who has had a case where the symptoms didn't show up on the mri but later they diagnose the lady with MS....

I too look just like that when I walk sometimes! We should come up with a name for that walk like the mucky march or something ( I have to laugh at myself or else I would cry).

11/17/09 1:55pm

I fell twice this past week.  I watched your video to see if the falls might be caused by my MS or just clumsiness.  I'm definitely able to do the heel-toe fine.  I'm glad I saw how hard it was for you to do it.  I certainly don't have that problem.  Thank you so much for being willing to share your difficulties.  I can breathe a little easier knowing that my MS probably isn't responsible for my falls.

Thank you for posting this video and for your writing in general. You are an admirable example of someone who has taken a crappy situation (MS) and found a meaningful way of dealing with it, that is using your experience to help others.
