2 plus years undiagnosed and counting

By Unsure Tuesday, July 14, 2009

Ok.  Weird vision things are happening.  I've been caught off gaurd by my own hand under my porch light (it was at night) reaching up for the door handle and my hand trailed.  You know what I mean?  It shocked me so much that I nearly fell off my porch.  What was that?  I have been seeing ghost images of things depending on the light.  Oh and floaters or lines running across my field of vision.  This all seems to depend on the light.  Does this sound like anything that anyone has experienced?

Hi,

I'm also undiagnosed and have some of the same things going on. I had a big "dead spot" in my vision for a long time but it seems to have gone away earlier this year. I get small bright flashes frequently, bright lines a little less often, and lately something that looks like a small round checkerboard pattern. The best way I can describe this latter is to have you picture about a one inch circle of screen material from a screen door and hold it about arms length away from your nose. I've also had some shadows and something that looks like a black tire with a white or shiny center. These things just "flash" for a second and disappear. They get worse when I take a hot shower or work out.

I've read that these kinds of disturbances are not that uncommon with MS. My case is a little different in that I have some kind of "growth" behind my eye that may be playing a role. It isn't near the optic nerve so I suspect my problem is not from the tumor, but is neurological in nature. Then again I'm not the doctor.

Good luck and don't feel alone.

There are a variety of causes for visual disturbances.  Sounds like this would be a good time to see either your opthamologist or your neurologist for an examination and opinion on possible treatment.  Eye sight is precious and not something to mess around with.  If you are developing optic neuritis, then treatment would be in order.  I sincerely hope that you do not have MS, but this would be a good time to see the doctor.  good luck.

Thanks so much for your reply.  I have been seeing a neuro for about 3 years and had optic neuritis about a year and a half ago.  It didn't feel like this though.  Just felt like pressure and blurry vision before.  I have a mri scheduled for tomorrow.  He says that with other symptoms that I have it's looking unfortunately more and more like ms.  I want a diagnosis of what's going on with me but I don't want a misdiagnosis.  It's very frustrating and I feel like a hypochondriac most of the time.

Thank you again.

Dear Unsure,

I had all of these syptoms in my early twenties before I was dx with RRMS. (I am now 36 and happy to report that I am not much worse off than I was back then thank God!) I had the floaters, double vision and more recently have developped the occasional trailing which is quite psycadelic I must say. It caught me off-guard the first time! I recently found out that I have what is called an INO (internuclear opthalmoplegia). Basically, because of a lesion on a nerve controling my eye muscle, my left eye moves more slowly than my right eye. This is what causes the double vison when I am fatigued or stressed. So, to answer your question, these symptoms are typical in this person dx with MS, yes. Does that mean you will be? I am not sure. I suggest that you take at least 6000 mg of a good quality efa supplement starting today for starters. I suggest krill oil. Also, check out "The Best Bet Diet" online and follow it! I wish I had known about it 16 years ago and had followed it! This diet will stave off new relapses and thus new symptoms! I urge you to do it! Good luck to you!
