Before all else fails

By Hollyk Saturday, January 23, 2010

Well, I had my thyroid out yesterday; initial results are benign follicular nodules; but will know for sure Monday.  I believe they are benign; but there was more than this reason to remove my thyroid.

I have wonderful doctors who truly care @ me as a patient and have taken wonderful care of me.  My PcP put me on hydrocortizone injections before the surgery so I didn't have the same problem as I did with the minor surgery.  I have to say; just that alone is like night and day.  I do not feel that "empty of all energy" that I felt before.  However, I have had a slight complication; my calcium keeps dropping (a not so uncommon symptom of complete thyroid removal) so now I am on infusion of calcium...

They couldn't tell if it was the MS or the calcium creating a buzzing sensation throughout my body... The hydrocoritzone injections along with the calcium are helping me to feel a little stronger.

I think that when doctors take the time to pay close attention to what your individual body is going through and they prepare you before hand for the onslaught; it can make a world of difference.  The key is communication and persistence.  I know that some of us can be intimidated by our doctors; but if you don't speak up for yourself; they don't know.  If somehow you get a doctor who won't listen; you have the freedom to get another.

As I sit here hooked up to an IV and heart monitor; people staring at me for typing away...I can't help but thank God that I am alive and well enough to share.  Yes I am in some pain; but all the more proof that I am alive!

Take care and God bless!!!

I'm back!

Holly you have had the roughest couple of months!  So glad you came through operation.   My sister had all but tiny piece of thyroid taken out in 80s I think and no follow up.  Even now she doesn't really get any answers to her questions about possible effects of little bit of thyroid left functioning.  Please keep us all up to date with ur progress.  Wish we could chat live to help u when upset at hospital, Anyway lots of hugs not hard ones very gentle ones. Hope to hear more about progress soon.
