I also have a dislike of those critters. Even more so since the relationship became personal. Following the death of my grandmother in 1991, lots of boxes came to live at my parents' home. Boxes of clothing, boxes from her house, boxes from her attic. Lots of boxes, most of which were stored in my bedroom.
I was home visiting after the school year ended (graduate) school. And began to experience some pain and redness in a somewhat personal location on my body. I was also simply not feeling well, wondering if I was coming down with the flu or something.
Well, I asked my mom to examine the TWO spots I had which were hot and red. These spots were located on my be-hind. A little embarrassing to be 23 years old and asking your Mom to check out your butt cheeks. We tried some benedryl cream to take down the irritation.
Next day, I felt worse!! We assessed the condition of the 'spots' which were now each the size of handprints. Now, nobody had been slapping my butt and we did witness such a huge change. There were even small black spots in the center of the large red 'hand prints'.
Off to the ER we go because it was the weekend and I did not feel well. The doctor took one look at the evidence and actually laughed out loud!! He laughed at seeing something he had never seen before.
Apparently I had been bitten by a brown recluse (fiddle back) spider. Not once, but twice. Doctor says that they only bite once. Well, this one must have taken a chunk on one butt cheek and turned to help himself on the other.
I got a couple different meds. One to combat the spider venom and one more pain. Then I had to keep the 'black centers' cleaned out and bandaged with antibiotic cream. Those black spots were where the skin was already dying from the spider bite.
It took that whole summer to treat those spider bites, but eventually the skin filled back in. Some folks are not so lucky. But thankfully, I got sick enough to ask my Mom to look at my butt before it had gotten really bad.
So. I have a distinct dislike for spiders being in close contact.

Friday, October 16, 2009 at 04:50 PMOMG OMG you are lucky, that is why I don't like spiders! I spray my windows, and doors even now, I just get all wigged out at the thought of a spider. My husband fusses he likes to take pictures of their webs, now I admit they do make nice photos, but honey when he turns his back, I give them a large drink of RAID, I do not even play! Now you understand why I would not go back down that hall in the dark, honey I aint totally crazy! sherry/smomdukes

Omigoodness! I HATE spiders! Seriously, I'd rather wake up to a grizzly bear loose in my home than a spider!
And, like the good mom I am, I've instilled a healthy terror of the darn things in my daughter. Last week she killed what we like to call a "ginormous" one in the bathroom, using the last of the Raid and a half a can of hair spray. Then she put a glass jar over it to further entrap it's dead, asphixiated body. And there it sat for the better part of 2 days, waiting for my son to come over process the crime scene and dispose of the dead body!
So, yes ma'am, I most certainly feel your pain on this one! lol
Hope you're having a really good, spider-free day! :)
