Breakthrough Pain: More Than Just a Pain in the Neck

By Amy Gurowitz, Health Guide Friday, February 04, 2011
Have you ever had an extraordinary pain that doesn't respond to medication, one that has a team of doctors scratching their heads as they start the pharmacologic dart game? I have. It's a thrilling MS tale of pain, drugs, more pain and more drugs, and even more pain and even more drugs rounding it of...

Hi Amy,

I just read your story of the intermittant foot pain beginning when you were trying to pay attention in class. This particular symptom is one I have not experienced.

I was so glad to see that you rely on "residual optimism," and that you always seem to have some. It is always there, although there are times when that is a surprise. There is always hope as you had to learn with that horrible foot pain.

I wish you luck, but I know you carry your own.

Thanks Vicki~

Finding hope at the lowest points in my life seems almost involuntary. It's something that's part of my being. I'm not sure where it comes from, nature? nurture? But it's saved me more than once in this life with MS. And so I feel very lucky.
Best,
Amy

Hi,

I too suffer from the "break through" pain. Like you, I have run through the entire gammet of meds and "cocktails" and never really found anything that truly works. Like you, I have just come to accept that this is MS and although I don't like it, I must live with it as a constant companion. It is only a companion and not the ruler of life.

It's very refreshing to read your enthuasium and your unwillingness to give in. Thank-you for sharing this experience, it helps those of that live with nearly constant pain and the intense "break through" pain to understand that we are not alone.

Thanks so much for your comment AngelMS!  Of course your response pays the "i can relate" sentiment even further forward.  It is something that satisfies me greatly... and helps me to feel part of something bigger. They say "misery loves company"and while that may be true, I prefer coping DESERVES company! Thanks for being part of that!

I love that "Coping DESERVES company" I'm going to steal that phrase, and of course you will get credit for it!! I know so many that the phrase will apply to and help. Thanks!
