Stress Begets Stress Begets Stress When Living with MS

By Amy Gurowitz, Health Guide Tuesday, September 27, 2011
Isn't it annoying that stress has a negative impact on our health? I mean if we're already dealing with emotional and mental strain, we clearly need endorphins not ulcers! Why isn't there an immuno-modifier that can address this issue? And since we're talking about lacking immune systems, let's talk ...
Can You Find the Funny While Living with MS: Question of the Week

Amy,

You made a serious subject extremely lighthearted and amusing - you made me chuckle!Laughing  Of course the fact that you are not progressing and are not having an exacerbation helped lighten the load, too!

One question - did you have a hidden camera on my life this summer?:)  We seem to have lived parallel lives over these last months.  The big difference between you and I is that you are fortunate to have a caring and dedicated neurologist to go to.  I am anxiously (overly) waiting for my first appointment with a new neurologist in November.

Thanks for the chuckle.  On this gray, rainy morning it was a great way to start my day!

Hi Cathy,

Thanks for your response. Taking my greatest challenges and finding a way to laugh at them, is my greatest and most effective coping mechanism. Reading the comments of people who relate is a rich icing on that coping cake!

That said, I'm sorry to hear you can relate so well. It was a tough summer that is thankfully over.

Here's to the hope that this neurologist is all that you need and more... and that will make everything sweeter in your (our) new year!

A sweet and healthy New Year to you and yours, too!

I have been there many times.  However, since none of the meds work for me and I had devestating side effects from steroid treatments, I have searched and finally found a way to stop my MS.  It was a ten year search until I finally found the solution through eliminating all allergens from my diet.  It's a shame that the medical community is not interested in this way to healing.

Hi Ellie,

Thanks for sharing your experience. It really is an intense personal journey, searching for the treatment that works for you. Some people never get there. I'm glad to hear that you have. Thanks for sharing... I will visit your link.

Hi Amy:

Like you, I'm pretty physically reactive to stress. Even small events that I wouldn't recognize as stressful can leave me fatigued, shaky and in increased pain. That has led me on several occasions to think I'm having an exacerbation. It's frustrating that I'm overloaded very quickly and, sometimes, seemingly without reason.

I work part time and sometimes it's evident to my co-workers that I'm struggling a bit to stay at work. Several times I've been asked why I don't work from home (which is possible) a day or two a week. What they don't realize is that I hate the thought that MS will keep me home. I like being among people and the office environment. What my coworkers see as perk doesn't appeal to me at all.

It certainly is a challenge to live life with a minimum of stress so that I can live life. Know what I mean? It's a balancing act that I haven't yet mastered.

Yes. I'm right there with you Julie. It's not always easy to find the way to manage the stress when we all have different emotional response and needs. I understand your desire to be out of the house with people. My changing MS has me working from home and using the added resource of energy in other areas (like my 10 year old!). But I completely understand where you are coming from. It's the Jewish New Year today and I'm planning on a stress-reduced year to come. I wish the same for you!

Dear Amy: Stress is an experience that I am all too intimately familiar with (but then again, find me anyone who isn't?!?).LOL!!! Although you write about your personal experience of living with MS and the powerful connection between your MS symptoms and stress cycles, the ease with which I find myself relating to you always surprises me as I am not living with MS myself. Your blog entry and many before it connect me to my own humanity and my own vulnerabilities to stress as well as the many health liabilities that come with being a living being. Thank you for your continued success of impressing me to no end! You are such an inspiration. Love you, Daphs :-)

Hi Amy I have never responded to a post. However I am having serious stress issues and need to read and now respond. Thank you for your article. It has helped just knowing I am not alone. I'm moving mom from rehab into assisted living today and the stress and is daunting. Hopefully all will work out but very overwhelmed. I'm going to try the breathing and using Mary Had A ... sparingly. Happy and Healthy New Year Terri

Hi Terri,

I'm sorry that you are going through this same conundrum. Living with MS means we are dealing with difficult stuff everyday, so when the normal life "stuff" happens it goes all exponential.  I hope the breathing and singing helps. One thing that might have helped me, is simply that everything will be ok eventually. It's hard to see when you're soaking in it. So I'll make a note to remember this next time and use it to comfort myself. No doubt many doses of inhalation, exhalation and a wide variety of nursery rhymes will be necessary. I hope you find that to be the case very soon.

Thanks for your response Terri.

Best, Amy

Hi Amy:

What a great piece of writing! It made me laugh, tear up  a bit, and realize once again that while MS symptoms vary from person to person, many experience the same. I could modify a few words of your piece and it would be me.

Thanks. You made me smile.

It's such a warm fuzzy feeling to read that there is someone out there who can relate. Making that person laugh... now that just rules~

Thanks for sharing... it made my evening.
