MS Diagnosis

By Yellow Rose Friday, March 09, 2012

I am still working on getting a MS diagnosis. Have had symptoms for years just never realized what was going on with me until my younger sister was diagnosed with MS in 2009. She is one of the lucky ones if you can call having MS lucky, hers showed in the spinal fluid but mine did not. I just turned 54 and have been poked and proded since early 2010, in an effort to rule out everything else that could be wrong with me. My  biggest symptoms are numbness in my hands especially my left hand, walking difficulties, balance issues, blurred vision, incontentence, IBS issues and I have had 2 MRI's that show lesions one which I was told by my neurologists has been there since birth and one since early childhood but she is still reluctent to give me a MS diagnosis. I am getting set up to see a MS specialists in Dallas in the near future. Hope to get something done with this new Dr. Just want to get on medication that will help me feel better and hurt less. Not giving up no matter what the outcome is will just keep on going as long as possible.

Hi Yellow Rose,

Sometimes getting the diagnosis can take such a long time.  In comparison, it does make it seem like others are somewhat lucky.  Being in limbo can be difficult.

I'm glad to read that you will be seeing an MS specialist very soon.  That is the type of neurologist who would be best able to look at all the evidence and make a firm diagnosis, even if that firm diagnosis is one of "probable ms."

To be honest, I have a hard time understanding how/why a neurologist would say that you've had particular lesions since childhood if there is no proof of that from when you were young.  Lesions, especially MS lesions, can come and go so MRI is only one test which can help lead to a diagnosis.

I hope that you find answers quickly and that your doctor's visit goes well.  Let us know how it does go and what the doctor says.

The neurologists I am seeing here is reluctenant to give me a diagnosis mostly due to my age. I know of others who were not diagnosed until later in life so she should not even be considering this as an issue. Thanks for your comforting words and I will let you know how my appointment with the specialist goes.

Thanks
