Using corticosteroids are the mainstay treatment for a relapse in MS. Steroids help to reduce inflammation in the central nervous system and may suppress the immune system from attacking myelin. However, in general, steroids are not a long-term solution for treating MS, as they can lose effectiveness if overused. Therefore, steroids are seen as a maintenance therapy.
