How do you proceed when a doctor writes you can not do job? How to look at disability, etc?

I had a functional capacity evaluation and the doctor wrote for return to work I am unable to perform essential job duties. How do you start looking at disability or exploring other job options in a company where I have worked for 20 years without messing with benefits earned.  In general, I have lots of questions and unsure where to start looking to narrow the search as there is so much information out there. Any response will be appreciated.

Hi Kim, as much as I love to work with MS it does not love me.  I would apply for disability.  It is going to take some time for it to come through, so I would go ahead anb apply.  For some reason beyond anybody's common sense, SSI seems to think that those of us with MS by some miracle are going to be cured real soon, go figureUndecided  But in the meantime I would go ahead and apply just in case it does not happen.  Not being funny or anything, but to get ahead of the game, I would apply.  sherry/smomdukesKiss

Thanks for your thoughts and I have been trying to sort through all the information but so much out there. Did you happen to be a person who contacted a lawyer to help with this process? I work at a hospital and have contact with doctors and social workers and I feel like I need one of each on my team to navigate thru thisFrown.Did you feel the same? I can say I am leaning toward disability due to fact if I take a lower paying position then I would end at that salary from the company for disability benefits. So very frustrating when I enjoy what I do and am told I am good at my job. trying to think this is just a new door opening. Thank you for your response. Kim08

prsonally i'd try working as long as possible to keep my benefits--if there are options of different jobs in your company try them--i'm not sure-ex act exactly what it's called americans w/disabilities act or something like that employers are supposed to make provisions for you. check it out-w/your dr.s approval. if you do file 4 disability, keep copies of every thing you send them. i had to fill the same papers out every time i had to appeal. i think they have dropped one of the denials, but it will still take a loooong time.all the people who are abusing the system are making it hard on those of us that really need it.
