Tuesday, October 05, 2010 constant asks

Q: I remember reading about a test that had something to do with the feet and if the toes bent a certain way????How exactly did that test work? wish I could remember more about it

Hi constant,

 

You are referring to the Babinski test or Babinski sign.  The examiner uses a sharpish object to scrap across the bottom of the foot.  In someone with normal nerve signals traveling to the feet, the toes will curl or do nothing.  In someone with a disruption of nerve signals, the toes will point up or fan out.  You might notice that babies have this same response and that's because their central nervous system isn't fully developed.
