what medication for shaking spazims
My wife ,age 61,has had MS for 16 yrs and has lost use of both legs and her left arm. She could use her right arm until the beginning of this year. Now her arm has uncontrolled shakes when she tries to do anything with it. She is now not able to feed or drink from a glass by herself. She is taking 5 Zaniflex and 10 Betasiron a day which doesn't help. Is there other drugs she could try to get mobility back in that arm?
Thanks for your question Robert. Here is our information on drug treatments as well as other treatment choices for persons living with MS.

Hi Robert,
Thanks for your question and I hope that you and your wife are doing well. I'm not a doctor (just a fellow MS patient) but it sounds like what you are describing is ataxia.
Just last year there was a review of research which sought to find out if any specific treatment was effective in addressing the problems associated with ataxia. What was determined is that the majority of studies conducted did not meet scientific standards and that there really is no evidence to suggest a particular approach is effective.
Some of the different treatments which were explored in the various studies included physiotherapy, neurosurgery, and oral medications containing cannabis extract, isoniazid or baclofen.
Baclofen addresses spasticity as does Zanaflex. The best thing to do is to discuss this next concern with your wife's neurologist. He/she might suggest adjusting doses, changing meds, or adding occupational therapy to the treatment regimen.
Whatever is decided, I hope that you'll come back and let us know how you both are doing.
My best,
Lisa
