Q: Numbness Lying Down, Massage takes it away

Over the past few months I've had some back/neck injuries I didn't get addressed. After a while I could not get comfortable sleeping with my neck tension. Over the past 4 weeks I have pain and numbness in my left arm and spread to my right arm, then mainly left arm and leg now when I sleep and sit in a chair. When I walk it mostly goes away or reduces by 80%. I have major muscle tension from stress. The right arm is fine now.

When I get massaged on my neck (the pain grew worse after I lifted something a few months ago)and the numbness is worse when I lay down or sit in a chair.

Is it ms? I didn't think MS numbness would go away after you massaged a neck or if you got up and moved around 90% would leave? Do numbness in the arms and legs go away with MS because a lot of mine does with heat and massage. Is that how you can tell the difference between MS and muscle tension? If you work on the body part and it gets better  it's not MS?

Hi Joan,

From my unprofessional, layperson, MS patient perspective - this does not sound like the type of numbness which is associated with multiple sclerosis.  But it does sound like something worthy of discussing with your doctor.  There can be so many causes of numbness that it is important to find the correct cause in case there is an underlying medication reason which needs to be treated.  Hope you begin to feel better soon and a bit less stressed in the muscles.
