Q: Possible heat intolerance or cold intolerance issues - help!!

Hi.  I have relapsing and remitting MS which has been fairly stable for over 3 years.  I have weird issues with hot and cold and have heard of heat or cold intolerance but am not sure if what I have is the same thing.  I sometimes get strange sensations like where I accidentally spilt a drop of cold water on my foot and it felt like it was burning.  Also sometimes feel like I have a cold rod in my leg but nothing is there.  However the most troubling are if I get warm at all I break out into what feels like a hot flash I guess.  I get so hot I can't stand it.  I even feel like my ears are burning. My face usually gets red, I start sweating and I just can't seem to cool down.  Sometimes I will walk outside in the winter with just a tee shirt and jeans on and it is 20 degrees outside and I am still sweating.  Also if I feel cool - I go into feeling like I am freezing and just can't stand it and it takes forever to warm up.  The "hot flashes" are the worst as I can't handle the heat at all.  And they happen constantly.  I can't even wear any regular winter clothing.  I have to wear a t-shirt and then maybe a hooded sweat shirt that zips over it so I can take it off in a matter of seconds - it is that uncomfortable!!  At times when I feel cool and grab a light jacket or shirt to put on I usually begin sweating in less then a minute.  To further complicate - it could be menapause.  My hear even gets soaked from sweating.  I have NEVER been this way.  And it all started around the same time of my MS diagnosis so I am not sure which it is.  It is embarassing and impractical but i can't find any solutions other then to dress in layers.  It also causes trouble with sleeping and waking up constantly to either too hot or freezing.  Any suggestions?

Hi Cheryl,

My goodness this sounds rather unpleasant!  I experience heat intolerance and it seems to be somewhat different than what you describe.  When my body overheats, my MS symptoms get suddenly worse, I become extraordinarily fatigued, and I can't think straight.  When my body cools down, things go back to normal.

What you describe does sound like stereotypical "hot flashes" common during perimenopause/menopause.  However, MS can interfere with the body's ability to regular temperature.

Check the responses and follow some of the links to outside forums where other MSers have discussed similar problems.

BTW, the strange sensations you mention sound like paresthesias which can be caused by MS.

Talk to your neurologist.  As one person described in one of the forums, the symptoms might actually be caused by an exacerbation which could be treated with steroids.  It's worth calling your doctor.

Good luck

Lisa
