Q: I am a female and my neuro has given me Flomax(a drug for males only)

My concern is it safe for a female to take Flomax since it is for a mans protate problems? I am not child bearing anymore;that is not a concern. I am using it to aid in emptying my MS bladder completely and I cannot use other drugs like cadura or hytrin due to side effects.

Hi Roxxannie,

It is actually common for women to use Flomax for urinary hesitancy or incomplete emptying of the bladder.  Here is an article about Bladder Issues which you might find interesting.  I hope that Flomax works well for you.  Let us know how it goes, please?

Roxxannie, I haven't heard of any problems with women using this drug. With any new drug---keep your ears open and make sure your Dr. knows your concerns. We find that drugs sold for one problem, often also helps another. I hope this one helps you.

Ok, I just have to chime in here. My doctor also rx'd flomax for me, It may have worked very well for my bladder but I had no way of finding out, because it caused my Blood pressure to crash.  I was barely holding on at 40/? .   I have autonomic issues with the ms that I have. That is really the only thing I would be concerned about. I hope it works for you. I really do.

btw, now I use a catheter and cathat least once a day for a bladder that will not empty. AS a matter of fact, it stays pretty full. on the ultrasound it showed no emptying. looked as full on both tests, the before and after. That made sense to me, because when I tried to void to see what the results were, I was not able to produce more than a drop or so, which is very common for me. I didn't need an ulta sound to tell me that, they needed it to tell them.

Sad don't you think that they can't just hear the patient and save our insurance companies a lot of money. Oh that's right, they want the money. Dohhhhh.

I sure wish I could suggest a better option for you.
