Sunday, April 05, 2009 Christy asks

Q: what are the 3 things you wish your nurse would have explained better?

My name is Christy...I was diagnosed in 2005 with MS and that whole experience made me want to become a nurse. So, here I am, in nursing school and I have decided to do my presentation on The Nursing care of a patient with MS. My question to you is, thinking back to the beginning, what are the 3 things you wish your nurse would have explained better?

(I also put this in a sharepost, not sure where it belongs)

Thank you in advance!

Christy

Hi Christy!

I agree with Momdukes...I commend you on your career choice!  You are going to have a lot of insight into how to help others with this disease.

Let's see...we can only pick three?  Smile

1.  I would have liked it if someone had mentioned that heat can bring on MS symptoms.  I had no idea.

2.  I would have liked it if they would have told me more about the true efficacy rates of the MS drugs.  They kinda didn't say anything about that.

3.  I wished that they would have told me what options there would be for treating exacerbations.

This is an excellent question and I am so glad you asked it.  I do hope you stay on with us and share your experiences.  Thank you for your question!

Hi Christy first I think that it is a wonderful thing that you are doing.  All of the Biology, OMG, I could never do it, my hat is off to you.  Nurses to me are special people.  OK back on track , I think they should be told about the possible changes that their bodies are getting ready to go through, it may not be now, but it could come later, also about the depression that goes along with MS, not everyone experiences it, I have been blessed thus far, but some have not, tell them about the med choices, if they choose to use.  The ups and downs.  Give them a choice but be sure and let them know the dangers of their choices be very up front.  I was never told these things, I learned through trial and error.  Sherry/Smomdukes
