Q: I'm 39 (found out I have MS May 2010) I have been getting totally saturated with dripping sweat everytime I fall asleep for a couple years. (Bed also completely saturated) Is this normal?

When I mention saturating sweat- I mean drips rolling off of me- I have to change my pajamas two, or three times (should do it 4-5 times but I give up and just sleep with the annoyance) every night. (I start shivering while sleeping, boyfriend wakes me up to make me change clothes to get the cold wetness off of my skin and try to help me get warm again)- I tend to feel boiling hot and cold at the same time before I fall asleep. I try one leg out, no socks, less blankets- but I'm still cold at the same time- you name it, I'm trying everything I can to find a comfy balance but nothing stops the extreme sweats. Is this an MS thing??

Welcome to MS HealthCentral.  I'm sorry to hear about your MS diagnosis.  I wonder - did you tell your neurologist about the excessive sweating?

It is completely possible that the sweating can be an MS thing.  Here is a forum thread in which MS patients discuss excessive sweating.  At least one person said that she was treated with steroids (like with a relapse) and that the sweating had not come back.

Although it's not likely, hormones might be causing the sweating.  Talk to your primary care doctor and see about running some bloodwork just to rule it out.  If it is hormones, you might be able to do something about it.

If it is MS, it will be unpredictable whether the sweating continues or decides to go away someday.  Good luck and please let us know how you're doing otherwise.

Thank you for that forum link Lisa! It's nice to see that others had experienced that crazy sweating too. It's an odd feeling, when I am at rest, I feel boiling hot but also freezing cold at the same time. I told my primary before my MS diagnosis but she sarcastically told me not to use so many blankets and mentioned that it could be my hormones. I've had lots of bloodwork done but don't know if they tested my hormones. My neuro didn't say anything when I mentioned the sweating either. It's a curious thing. ;) Thank you very much for your thoughts and help Lisa!!

Hi Rainmaker,

Lisa gave you several good possibilities, but let me add one from a totally different direction. You may not like this one, but it certainly has its advantages.

What about menopause? I know you are too young, but sometimes nature jumps ahead. I recently read several articles, posts, and comments that I thought of as soon as I read your question. Here are comments to Trevis' blog that bring up the idea of a relationship between MS and menopause. There are relevant comments on the other pages, too, but I chose this link because it seemed like a theme. If it is menopause, you are describing night sweats.

Your doctor will have a treatment that reduces night sweats and hot flashes. When menopause is over — and it takes years — you are through with your monthly rituals and sex no longer requires birth control. I already have all the kids i want, so it has been a breeze.

When you chat with your doctor, include a question about menopause. Between all of these possibilities, you will surely get an answer. Good luck. Please let us know.

That's an interesting idea of the realtionship between MS and menopause Vicki! That would be lovely! I'd like to get that over with. ;) I haven't checked out the other pages yet but I'm about to. (I'm still learning how to use forums and such.) :) Thank you so much Vicki! I hope that you have a beautiful day!!

Hi Rainmaker, this is smomdukes, I was DX with MS in 2004 I was told that I had MS all my life.  I was 44 when I was DX, bur regarding the sweats.  Honey I could be outside with snow on the ground and sweat would be dripping off my hair off my boobs my clothes, my forehead, people would think I was crazy.  My clothes would be wet with sweat.  Water would be dripping from my face and it would be 5 degrees outside, I know what you are going through.  I have not gone through the change yet and I am 53 so it had to be the MS, I thought I would loose my mind but I managed to hold on to it LOL LOL LOL!  Just keep wiping, it gets better.  The sweats have stopped now Thank God!  Yours will too!
