Q: Health insurance for MS patients

I am covered by COBRA until 12/09.  I will need to find insurance for myself, at the lowest possible price.  Are there any insurance companies that help?

Hi Deb,

Finding new insurance really depends a lot upon where you live.  Each state has different rules regulating insurance companies selling policies in that state.

Foundation for Health Coverage Education offers an online tool which will help you determine what options are available in your specific state.

Some states have a high-risk insurance pool (to provide insurance for folks who are certain to be very expensive to insure and are rejected from other insurance companies) and some states require at least one insurance company provide coverage on a guaranteed basis regardless of pre-existing condition.  However both of these options are sure to be expensive.

Finding what is available specifically in your state is a good starting point.  If you need help with this, please feel free to contact me.  I'd be glad to try to help.

Hi Deb.

I am about to be in the same boat as you are.  I have MS and my Cobra expires the end of this month (12/09).  Have you found any insurance company that will cover you yet?  I am still researching and will let you know if I find something encouraging.

Good luck.

Melinda,

I am applying for the Missouri High Risk Health Pool.  I'm not feeling very confident at this point.  Let me know what you try.  Deb

Hi Deb.

Were you able to get health insurance?  I got a policy from HumanOne.

Hi Melinda,

I know this is old, but I'm about to lose my insurance, I have MS and I just wanted to know how much your policy cost you. Money is an issue.

Thanks,

Carolyn

Hi Carolyn,  I was able to get health insurance from Humana One through the Greater Las Vegas Association of Realtors, as I am a Realtor.  My plan costs about $250/month and my copay for Avonex is $55 a month.  Melinda
