So, how can we get affordable health insurance in California?

I had to quit working after 26 years as a teacher in California. Cobra is still in effect, but I can't afford the monthly charge of 860$ and it continues to rise. Co-pays and deductibles are also adding up way above and beyond my disability from CalStrs. Now what? I can't afford much more than my small apartment and utilities, gas and too much eating are out of the question. Help

Jeanne,

Thanks for your question.  I found this resource for you and hope that it helps.

Foundation for Health Coverage Education

This website has a questionnaire you can answer to determine what your options maybe within your state.  I tried it for myself (pretending I would be looking for new insurance options) and found that it gave me some information I didn't already know about types of policies available in Virginia.

It certainly is worth a try.  I personally would like to know if you found it helpful as I got the lead from an insurance broker friend.

Thanks,

Lisa
