Q: Does the literature and research state that soy products are truly healthy?

My husband, 33, was recently diagnosed with MS.  We are already a very health conscious family, especially when it comes to diet, and are convinced that "buckling our belts" even tighter, will dramatically impact our families health.  We are aware of the inflammation that milk products cause and due to our families lactose intolerance, we drink soymilk.  Unfortunately, I keep reading more and more about how soy's negative qualities may outweigh the positive.  I have 2 small children that consume a fairly large amount of soy to get their protein,so I want to be certain that it's safe and healthy.  I highly respect Prof Jelinek's body of research and would love some reputable references to try to answer these questions.  Obviously, blindly doing internet research is not conclusive.  :)

Hi Gray,

I know what you mean.  I have read recommendations to use and not to use soy products. I have found no MS literature that specifically mentions soy. There are some MS diets that recommend staying away from dairy, and soy milk does that.  However, just as many suggest no legumes, and soybeans fit into that category.

I found information on many sources, but nothing specific enough to answer your question. The best I found is Multiple Sclerosis Resource Centre which gives a list of pro and con reasons.

It may be a personal decision, or one you can make with your doctor. I wish you luck. Please let us know what you decide and why. Thanks.
