Friday, December 25, 2009 Paul McPartland asks

Q: I would like more info on my condition, i think i have all the symptoms of Multiple sclerosis.

Im 33 year old male and last 5 years suffered from pin needles in thighs of legs, numbness tingling all over various parts of body. In 2004 i had right wrist drop thst lasted 4 months was told by neurologist then i had laid on arm asleep no tests were done. Since been to GP with various complaints they thought i was mad.                                               Only last january i started having chest pains had ecg that was normal and demanded to GP that something must be done, he sent me too a podiatry clinic for a gait analysis i thought he was taking the pee! When i got there and done my walk, she inspected my legs and feet i was told i have claw toes, loss increased muscle tone in legs and it was neurological, then sent to orthopedic foot and ankle clinic which called my condition cavovarus foot bilateral.

Then i was sent to see neurologist, who sent me for nerve conduction studies which showed carpal tunnel in right wrist nerve conduction ok in legs, i did not have an EMG test though. Then again saw neurologist was told  me nothing to worry about and to have mri of spine 18 december i had this done of this year. Then my results of mri on 22 december, i was in his office for 5 minutes when i was told i have normal mri results of spine and nothing more they are going to do my condition is not neurological.

Im in a desperate situation i have chest pains, pins needles, cramps in upper obdomen, pain walking, blurred vision and cant get an answer of what is going on. Starting to think im going mad and its all in my head.

Please can any one help?

Hi Paul,

I know it feels as if you must be going mad. Each doctor seems to be sending you somewhere else.  I had a doctor tell me I must have slept wrong on my arm, too.  It soounded rather dismissive to me, then, and it sounds as if it felt that way to you, too.

Yes, as momdukes said, it takes a long time to diagnose MS, and the more I read I find it takes a long time for many neurological diagnoses. You were even told your problems do not seem to add up to a neurological problem. How frustrating it must be!

As hard as it is, please have patience as you go through all of this.  I hear it is getting better.  When I was diagnosed, it took an average of six years.  That means some people took even longer.  It is frustrating and stressful, but I think you will find the right doctor on the right day, and you will find what it is.

I wish you luck.  Please let us know about your progress.  Good luck.

Hi Paul, I am so sorry that you are going through all of this mess.  MS is just that also a mess.  It is so hard to DX, and some people go through hell and high water to get DX.  I personally did not have any tingling.  I had vertigo, my eyes crossed, and my balance went out of the window.  My suggestion is to continue to push for a DX,these things are not happening for no reason.  There is no cure for MS, which constitutes disability.  Something that doctors are beginning to be afraid of.  Undecided  Hang in there accept nothing less, hopefully you do not have MS, but if you do, I can understand just where you are coming from.  Best of luck!
