Q: Can you answer these questions?

We were informed 2 weeks ago that my sister has MS. Her lower back gets very warm its been going on for a week now. She also has no taste buds on her tongue. During the summer she complained about numbness in her hands and feet but she didn't see her doctor about it.  She finally contacted her  doctor and was scheduled to get a MRI but she fell while taking a shower and broke her rt. ankle and had to have surgery - she had a rod and screws put in her leg.  While recovering she experienced extreme pain when the catheter was removed and her bowels also locked.  She was given an MRI of the spine and brain and we were told she has a lot of white spots on the brain and spine and that she has MS.  She has nerve damage in her left leg.  She's in rehab right now but will be sent home because she can not put any weight on her rt foot for another month - she saw the surgeon last week.  When the cath. was removed for any length of time she was not able to pass her urine or bowels.  They have been giving her Prednisone at night.   She is 47 years old.  Is this problem with the bowels and urine normal?

LuLu,

I'm sorry to hear of all the events which have led up to your sister's MS diagnosis.  It sounds really uncomfortable.  I hope that rehap goes well and that she's back on her feet safely and quickly.

In answer to your question, yes MS can affect bladder and bowel function.  See - How to Manage MS-Related Bladder Dysfunction and How to Manage MS-Related Bowel Dysfunction - for more information.

If both are present, it is important to tackle the bladder issues first.  Depending upon what the actual issues are, the treatment varies.  Often a urologist is consulted.

Good luck to both of you.  I hope that she has a quick recovery.
