Q: UTI incontinence problem

I am 57 yrs old and was diagnosed with MS in 2001.  I'm inject Avonex weekly.

Beginning about two years agp.  I began having symptoms of a Urinary Tract Infection every few months, primarily pain with urination and urinary incontinence that went away after beginning antibiotic treatments.  Needless to say, I had little or no warning when I had to urinate, and yes I managed to wet my pants more than a few times before deciding to use pads or disposable underwear.

A few weeks ago, I developed what turned out to be a yeast infection in my armpit.  I also developed urinary incontinece, but once my yeast infection was treated, the incontinence subsided.

Once again I developed symptoms of another UTI and am taking antibiotics (Ceftin) and my urologist had my recent urinalysis sent for a culture.  The results showed a minor UTI.  My temperature is normal and my incontinence is once again going away.

I'm now wondering if whenever I develop any kind of illness, infection, or virus  I can expect to have an MS flare up or exacerbation in the form of incontinence.  I also read the warning signs associated with Avonex, and noticed incontinence as a possible side effect.  I'd appreciate guidance or advice from anyone concerning my situation.  Thanks in advance.  Suzy

Hi Suzy,

I tried to answer but it seems to have disappeared.  I'll try again.

Sorry to hear of your problems.  Whenever I get sick, my urinary symptoms do get worse even if my body temperature is not elevated.  Perhaps you should try to figure out how come you are having so many infections.

Regarding Avonex, I believe that people can develop antibodies to the interferon medications.  Ask your neurologist about a blood test.  Maybe it's time to try a different treatment?  Definitely talk to your doctor.

I hope you are doing better soon.

Lisa
