Q: I am 68 years old and have remitting, progressive MS. I am bothered a lot by the heat and have a te

I have problems with showers and so I take them when I will be going to bed.  I become dizzy and disoriented - so I feel it is better to be in bed, where it will not hurt to fall.

My question is - when I have a negative reaction to heat (as when I went shopping in a Nursery for plants to-day) what is happening to me physiologically and is there any danger in such a reaction?  I become dizzy, dis-oriented and prostrate.  I just want to go to bed.

Hi marj,

Are your showers in tepid water? I thought you might have been saying that when the character space ran out and it turned out saying te. If you are, then I do not know why you should be dizzy.

Your heat reaction at the nursery may begin to get worse and leave you on the floor and unable to move without help. The heat is causing you to have an extra loss of energy. It was a good idea to take the shower before you go to bed, and the temperarure should be tepid.

These reactions to heat, whether in the shower or outside, are not unusual in the MS world.

Good luck. Pleases tell us if this does not help.

I have to agree with Vicki.  When you have MS, heat is not our friend.  I am an Africian-American and before MS reared it's head I would lay out and tan every summer.  Well those days are over.  If I lay out in that sun now, it will take a crane to get me up, so I do not even play.  As for the showers, yes I agree I only take the hot ones at bedtime, and when I make it to the bed I sleep pretty good.  Hot shower at bedtime it is a wrap.  Sorry but that is the norm for us MS'rs.

Thank you for taking the time to answer these questions - but - I do take into account the reaction to heat that I and many MS patients suffer and weigh the consequences against whether or not the reaction is worth it - but yesterday, I had the most debilitating reaction I have had to this point (15+ years) and was concerned about what was happening to my body.  Was my heart sustaining some damage?  were my lungs harmed?  was my brain receiving another "blow"?  was there some cellular damage I did not know about?  What was happening to my body and was it being damaged in any way?  I need to know the risk I am taking.  Paying for some time in the sun with my grandchildren by being tired - flat out  - is one thing - but paying with damage to my body is completely different.  I need to know the "cost" of the activities that cause this extreme fatigue.

Thank you!  I am willing to pay the price of laying low for awhile if I knew for sure that I was causing no damage to myself.  Also, I would like to know what is happening to my body in these cases?  Thank goodness for air conditioning - what on earth did our ancestors do?

I know what you meanSmile  My house is covered by large trees, so most of the time it is shaded so that helps to keep it cool, Thank Goodness!

Smile  I am laughing because it is so dark in here and my friends do not understand why - it is cool so that I can survive and dark so I can see.  What a life!  It is better than the alternative.   Dracula must have had MS as well as his other problems!
