Q: Help...Numbness in my face.

I am now 27 years old and was told I have MS 4 years ago.  I had a good neurologist in New York, but recently moved to Tampa.  I was wondering if anyone knew of a good doctor in my area they could recommend? I just had an attack two weeks ago.  It is really starting to scare me.  My previous attacks only lasted for a week and were on my left side.  This current one has been the right side of my face.  It is completely numb.  You can pretty much draw a line down my face and it is completely on the right side. Also, my lips and teeth kind of burn a little, but is numb.  I also have pressure in my right eye, but can see fine.  Has anyone dealt with something like this? If so,How long did it last for you?  I stopped taking my Avonex a year ago because I was feeling good, exercising regularly, and tried to block MS out of my head.  I know this was a big mistake and am now going back on Avonex this Friday. It would be great if anyone can help me or answer my questions.  Thank you for listening.

Hi Kyle,

To find a neurologist who specializes in MS in your area, contact the local chapter of the National MS Society.  They should have a list.

Sorry to hear that you are experiencing a relapse.  Besides sensory changes in your face/eye/mouth, have you had any other symptoms?  If so, you may want to consider a round of IVSM (steroids).

Know that relapses can last for varying lengths of time.  I have had ones which lasted for months and others which lasted only for a week.  It is unpredictable.

No matter the disease, it is very tempting to stop taking medication once we begin to feel better.  Don't beat yourself up too much about it, but I'm glad to read that you are starting back on Avonex.  Sounds like it had been working for you previously, hopefully it will so again.

Thank you for responding to me.  I have not had any other problems besides my face this time.  I did a week of iv infusions last week, but got nothing from it.  In the past, the infusions worked well for me.  I see a doctor on wedneday, so hopefully he can give me an answer.  With this numbness in my face I also have an extreme burning sensation on my tounge.  Do you think that is related to this?

Hi Kyle,

It would definitely be possible that the numbness in your face and the burning on your tongue are related.  They may not involved the same cranial nerves, but they are certainly in close proximity.

I don't know if this will make you feel better or worse.  I have a numbness, fuzzy feeling, sometimes pressure which comes on my face, mostly on the left side.  I use gabapentin to relieve the pain and that helps.  When I'm really tired, my face feels like cotton balls are on it.  Most of my more recent relapses were preceded by the fuzzy/numb face sensation.

But honestly, it is something which doesn't surprise me anymore.  It has become just part of my experience.

I hope that yours does resolve at some point.  Let me know how the doctor's visit goes.
