Q: Here are my symptoms- waiting for blood work results. Any thoughts?

I am a 29 year old mom of a preschooler.  For about over a year I have experienced a lot of back and leg pain that has always been associated with sciaticia.  I herniated a disk about two years ago, but even before that my massage therapist was concerned about the amount of pain I experience and tenderness all over my body.  In the last 6 months, I've had strong general fatigue, muscle fatigue in my legs and hips, body aches/pains.  In the last two months I have started having bladder leaks, and in the last week I have had muscle twitches and spasms in my face (mostly my eyes/chin), butt, thighs, arms, etc. There have been other things like tinnitus and an increase in my vertigo (that I've had my whole life)  I saw my OBGYN and told her what was going on.  She ran tests for b12, magnesium, mono, blood panel, thyroid (which has been negative 3 years running), RA, etc.  She is out of town for two weeks, so I am waiting anxiously for my results.  I can't imagine that a simple vitamin or electrolyte deficiency is causing all this!  She says if they all come back ok then I will be referred to a neuro for FM, MS, and other arthritis testing.  Also, on a trip back in may I had my worst spell with the muscle aches and leg fatigue- I wanted to enjoy myself but told my husband it was so hard to walk and I desperately wished I had a wheelchair so I could enjoy my vacation! I just had a good week with tons of energy right before the twitching started and fatigue returned last week.

I think that these results can point them into the right direction.  I went in before being diagnosed because I kept feeling ike I was getting the flu but would never get it, extreme fatigue that I chalked up to working too many hours, going to school FT, and having a family.  Then I thought it was mono, so my family doctor decided to run blood tests.  It came back that I had barely a trace of vitamin D in my system so she put me on a prescibed supplement.  Eventually I ended up having an acute attack which brought me back to her and she immediately sent me for an MRI which lead to my diagnosis.  So, after my long explanation, yes, I think blood work can show a lot of information.  It sounds like you have struggled with a lot of symptoms over the years and I pray that they find a diagnosis so that you can get the treatment needed no matter what it is.  Good luck with your test results, take care.

Thanks for the encouragement on the blood tests.  I was sort of afraid that it would show a vitamin def. and they would treat that but there would still be more to it than that.  I've also had boughts with not finding my words- from a girl who was on a high school debate team and had to think on her feet!  I am forgetting things too, which may just be because I have a 4 year old. Smile  I've taken b12 in the last few months and a multi vitamin with no real change.  Sounds like with you it is possible to have the deficiency and have it related to ms?

Yes for me it was within a matter of weeks after getting my prescribed vitamin D supplements to when I had my first attack which lead to my diagnosis.  Depending on your doctor and your results they may choose to have you go in to get an MRI to see if you may have some lesions.  My doctor seemed to be on it right away.  When I went in and complained of having a tingling in my left hand and loss of control in my left arm and foot she sent me in for the MRI.  She later told me she already was pretty sure I had MS but didn't want to alarm me before the MRI results.  Keep us posted on how you are doing.  This site is a blessing, it is nice to know that other people are out there dealing with similar issues and hearing their stories, it is comforting.

You know, I was just looking at the site more and saw where one of the lifestyle changes was cutting out caffiene and drinking two liters of water every day.  This was somthing she asked me to do on the say I got my bloodwork done.  She said it was because she wanted to "flush out my system" but I can't help but wonder if it's a similar thing about not wanting to alarm me.  When she said that I would be going to a neuro if the results were all normal it would be so they could check me for Fibro, MS, and arthritis.  I told her that I was taking a multivitamin and drinking more water lately but still had symptoms.  She really never went the direction of "I'm sure it's just a deficiency" and she said that my tender spots didn't line up with the usual fibro points.  I'm sure you both know how nice it is for me to be able to talk about this!  If I talk to someone who hasn't experienced it they will think I'm jumping to conclusions and thinking of the worst!

Results came back normal.  Now I have to wait two weeks for my follow up appt with my doc to see if she is referring me to the neurologist.  The nurse on the phone said that the doc wants to wait and see how my symptoms are in two weeks.  But there's the rub- they come and go as they please.  So far it's looking like a solid two weeks of symptoms and moving into a third.  But I never know when it may stop or get worse!  Guess I'll just have to ride it out until then!
