Hey Sandra Jean

Are you meaning "Orencia" with an "O"?  I did find information about this type of infusion.  Here is some very detailed and extensive information about Orencia, official information from the FDA about uses and side effects.  It seems to be used mainly to help folks who have Adult Rheumatoid Arthritis.  I have been searching in vain for its uses for Multiple Sclerosis patients but it doesn't mean that information is not out there.

I am hopeful that someone else has  additional information and/or experience with Orencia to tell you.

What does your friend say about using this drug?  Has it helped any?

Hi Sandra,

I did some more digging for information regarding Orencia which is approved for use in Rheumatoid Arthritis.  A number of drugs approved for use in one autoimmune disease are currently being studied for use in another autoimmune disease such as multiple sclerosis.

Here's what I found about Orencia (abatacept).  It was being studied in Phase II trials by Bristol-Myers Squibb a few years ago.  The trial was terminated early due to a faulty trial design and imbalance in treatment groups.

I did notice that a number of insurance companies specify that they will not pay for Orencia in the treatment of MS, calling it experimental.

So it's possible that her doctor is using this drug experimentally since it did show some positive results in one treatment group of the study.  Or that it is being studied again in clinical trials.

If this is the drug she is using, you can find more information about it here.

If this is not the drug she is using, please come back and ask the question again.

Lisa
