Receiving disability $ and working

Hi Guys,

You'all give me such good advice I just wanted to share an experience with you and see if anyone has had this problem.

SSDI tells me I can work and make up to $900.00 per month ( 2008 rate) and my disability will never be touched. So I went to work Seasonal as well as 10-12 hours per week at the Board of Elections. I had something they wanted, they had something I wanted.

I also get money from Bank of America, where I was employeed for 23 years. I have received the same amount since they started sending $ to me in 2000.

This last March,  Bank of America did not deposit my $ into my account. I called them after I had 3 returned drafts, and was told since I was working and receiveng a W2. That told them I was able to working so they stopped my money.

I explained to them that I was working 10-12 hours a week, they said even if I worked 1 hour they could take dollar for dollar on any $ that I earned. And they did.

I was out sick as much as I was able to go in, but they understood and I made my own hours.

So I immediately quit working all together. It seems that something should be done about this. They do not increase what they send me, but can take dollar for dollar on what I earn.

I just wanted to share this and ask if anyone has had a  similar experience.

Candy,

I'm sorry that you're running into this.  It is absolutely correct that you can earn a limited amount while receiving SSDI.  But it sounds like you are experiencing something different.

If Bank of America was paying you longterm disability, it is because you were unable to work and this was a benefit from your former employment.  Longterm disability is paid only as long as you're unable to work.  It is separate from SSDI and does not abide by the same rules.

Contact your local NMSS chapter who probably offers some free disability advice.  They would know better how to help you.  Sorry.
