Q: Are migraines that last 7 - 11 days maybe a symptom of MS and not true migraines?

I was diagnosed with MS around 10 years ago following a bout with complete right sided numbness that started with my foot and travelled up my complete body including the right side of my head...which made me more hopeful that it wasn't a stroke.  Since then I have had problems with blurry vision and more localized numbness.

However I get severe migraines that often last up to 7 days, often longer, that do not always respond to the usual migraine drugs.  While I am suffering from the headache, I notice that I develop a right sided limp that comes and goes.  I also have an awful burning pain in my left shoulder blade about the size of a quarter.  and a similar pain deep within my head between my eye and ear.  Either side, depending on which side the migraine is attacking.  Most often the migraine will start on the right side, almost get better, and then move to the other side just as badly as it started.  Very occassionally I get migraine with auras...I now wish for that kind as a quick dose of Emerge will get rid of it within 2 hours.

While I have the migraine I also get confused, tired, and have trouble speaking, I can't find the right word, and typing this is taking longer than usual as I keep typo'ing.  I am now wondering more and more if I don't have true migraine but that this is a symptom of the MS...or is the MS a symptom of the migraine??????  So confused, and in so much pain.

Any suggestions you can give would be great.  My MRI shows some lesions, but more when they do a contrast dye.

Thanks

Hi Allison, I just noticed your question. In Jan, 2008, I also presented with right side numbness from my foot to my chest. My right foot felt like a block of wood. The docs think I've had MS since my late 30's. I'm now 59. My latest flare was the result of pneumonia & 3 weeks of very hot weather. Making it worse, our car's air conditioner was broken. I spent 14 days in the hospital, 5 of those on hi-dose IV Solumedrol. Since the pneumonia began, maybe 4 months ago, I've had weird headaches with dizziness AND confusion, stabbing pain over one eye that seems to switch sides then travel over my head, a line of distortion in my lower rage of vision, like a crack in a window, & a blurred left eye. (It seems like my eyes don't work together.) I've also had pain in my upper back on the right side, like a small tight fist. They thought this was the pneumonia, but now I wonder. Right side limp is also now present with foot dragging. The inability to speak, think clearly, or write well is very distressing to me. I've always been very articulate. I understand your feelings. As a professional artist, the visual changes are also VERY frightening. Before this flare, I never had a diagnosis of migraine, just sinus headache. Now I wonder if they WERE sinus related. I PERSONALLY believe this is absoutely MS stuff. I will be seeing my Neuro later this month & I'll let you know what HE thinks. Try to be positive. So little is understood about this illness & the symptoms can be so varied & frightening. And the Docs don't seem to agree on anything either. I try to remind myself daily of all the body functions I still have & list all the things that are good in my life. When MS stuff is happening to us, it's very hard to be up-beat & sometimes I feel like my friends & family are sick of seeing or hearing my distress. Can't really blame them. You have to experience it to understand this daily nightmare. That's why we have each other. You are now one of my "Peeps". (That means "my People") Talk to me anytime. God bless us all, Katkan

Hi, I am new to this group, my name is Alison.

I suffer from migraines with Aura, and over the past few years they have been getting worse, and different.

My neuro has said that they can change, maybe thats what is happening to you?

Take care

Alison

So...I am wondering if I can control my migraines better that I may get less relapses, as the migraines seem to be triggering the relapse.  Do you do anything to control your migraines before they start?

Thanks

Heather
