Thursday, December 16, 2010 Shua Yang asks

Q: Is there any finacial aid for persons that have passed away due to MS? My best friends mother, Sherry Villa, has just recently passed away and the family now faces the aftermath of funeral costs.

Sherry Villa, a mother of three, in her early 30s was diagnosed with MS. She battled with a PPMS for 17 years where she spent most of those years bed riden fighting off bed sores, suffering multiple cases of pneumonia, endured several surgeries and requiring mulitple resuscitatons. In her last YEARS she was reduced to assisted breathing and eating through tubes and communicating with rudimentary flash cards. Even after all that she never surrendered to MS. She passed away with pride in her heart and her spirit indomitable. So I ask you, is there no funding to propery send this extraordinary woman off with the honor and respect that she deserves?

Hi Shua Yang,

It sounds like Sherry was an extraordinary woman.  I'm very sorry to hear of her death and so many years of enduring MS.  Unfortunately, I do not know of any special funds which are available to assist with funeral costs.  That sounds like a very nice idea.  On the rare chance that there is something available, you might check with the National MS Society.  They should know what is out there.

I'm very sorry to hear of you loss and hope that the family is doing well, especially Sherry's children.  Thank you for writing such a lovely tribute to her here.
