Q: My sister is in her last stage of MS- what should we expect?

My sister has been bed ridden for the last 4 yrs in a wheelchair since 1996, she is now 42 yrs old and on her last stage with this terrible disease. Her body can no longer sustain the food and she is not getting enough nourishment the body needs.  I would like to know how long can someone live without food.  The doctors have now decided to remove her IV because she may get water in her lungs..she has suffered so much....how long does this most dreadful ending take.  I would like her to have peace and comfort.

Dear Sally,

I'm so sorry for your loss.  It is never easy to watch a loved-one die.  Ironically, today is the anniversary (5 years) since my grandmother passed away and this is what happened.

She was getting fluid in the lungs which had to be suctioned out regularly so she could continue to breath.  In the hospital, she had been fed through a feeding tube and had been for a little while.

When the decision was made to stop using the feeding tube, the family brought her home.  No feeding tube and no fluids.  Those present did continue regular suctioning of her lungs.

I think she was brought home on a Monday and passed away on the following Monday.

I'm so sorry.  It is such a difficult decision to have to make.  My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family right now.  I hope that she goes peacefully.

Blessings,

Lisa

What is the last stage of MS? Should you get your family prepared?
