Hi Sheila,

 

Welcome to Health Central.  The short answer to your question is - absolutely you can eat seafood if you have multiple sclerosis.  In fact, I ate seafood on Thanksgiving day instead of turkey this year.

 

Longer answer - There are things to consider when considering whether to eat seafood and shellfish, no matter your health condition.

 

Seafood is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids which are considered essential fatty acids.  Jane Brody writes in the article, Tip the Scales in Favor of Fish, "the omega-3 acids perform many biochemical functions that can benefit the heart and blood vessels. They can inhibit the synthesis of substances that promote inflammation, reduce the tendency of the blood to form clots, stabilize the electrical activity of the heart, lower triglyceride levels, reduce blood pressure moderately and improve the functioning of artery linings."

 

As someone living with multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis, I take Omega-3 supplements for the anti-inflammatory effect.

 

But there are risks in eating seafood, especially shellfish.  If you are allergic to shellfsh, then certainly do not consume any.  Fish can be contaminated with mercury and other toxic pollutants.  Shellfish can become contaminated with harmful micro-organisms, from the naturally occurring "red tide," or accumulates bacteria.

 

Clams, oysters, shrimp, lobsters, etc should never be eaten raw.  Best way to protect yourself is to thoroughly cook all seafood.

Hey Sheila

 

I was once on a seafood diet...the kind where you eat everything you see.  Bah-dum-bum.  I know...I won't quit my day job. 

 

But seriously I was very intrigued by your question and the first thing that ran through my head was...I wonder why she is asking this.  Has she heard something?  What is up with seafood and MS?

 

When I looked at the literature it seems that more than one reference has made a connection between seafood and MS, and some are making some rather extravagent claims.

 

I found one site where a lady is claiming that seafood is "curing" her MS.  I am a natural skeptic so I am quite hesitant to believe that anything, natural or medical can cure Multiple Sclerosis at this point in time.  I think it is too easy to attribute remissions to whatever we are doing at the time. 

 

Yet let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater.  Perhaps there is some merit in eating certain types of seafood to promote overall good health.  My bias actually is towards using natural ways to up the ante for good health and food is the easiest source to look at.

 

You always have to look at the source of any claim however.  Here is a statement made by a fishery.  "There are also a few studies that link fish- and other seafood consumption to a positive effect on other health problems. NIFES carry out research into the importance of the total effect of eating seafood with respect to the development of diseases such as, diabetes, obesity, multiple sclerosis and osteoporosis."

 

Of course they want more positive research in this area as they want you to buy more fish!

 

Likewise the  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration   makes this claim:

"Other health problems that may be controlled or alleviated by the consumption of omega-3 fatty acids from fish are asthma, arthritis, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, hypertension, migraine headaches, cancer, and some kidney diseases."

 

I always like to look at independent and objective research and suggestions such as what is given as advice for people who have MS from the University of Maryland Medical Center who tell us: "Omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish oil, 1 - 2 capsules or 1 tbsp. of oil one to two times a day, to help decrease inflammation and improve immunity. Cold-water fish, such as salmon or halibut, are good sources." 

 

So you just may have something here. 

 

It certainly wouldn't hurt to eat more cold water fish unless of course you are allergic to it.  It is an easy way to help your overall health. 

 

One of the reasons I do love to answer these questions is that I always learn something new myself and today is no exception.

There are benefits on eating seafood/shellfish. The omega fats helps your cardio system and other areas. Only thing a cardiologist would say it is not good to deep fat fry your foods, in the south heart attacks and strokes are elevated on the national scale because of fried foods, espically, South Carolina. I eat catfish (farm raised) and shrimp all the time and would be lost without my catfish, even though I corn mill it and fry it and try to drain as much fat as I can. One still has to have some pleasures in life.....God Bless
