Q: Has anyone had an LP? Also - has anyone had non-active lesions for a year only to confirm you have MS through the LP?

Last January I started working out a lot was getting some headaches and had some hand problems some tingling etc - but it would come and go... so of course doc orders MRI...MRI comes in with non specific white matter lesions about 10 on one side and 15 on the other... then they sent me for another 3 months later to do again this time of my spine and brain with contrast... no enhancing lesions and no new lesions. did another 6 months after again - no new or enhancing lesions.... SO MRI's have been stable since last January. They tell me the lesions don't look like MS. However they sent to an MS specialist in Seattle. SHe took a detailed history and wants to keep track of me for 5 years. I have bladder issues where I can hold my pee but once I start I can't control the pressure of my flow at all. It started in my 20s after I had each baby - my toes were numb for months ... I've had brain fog issues big time - that lasted for a month - I could not remember my husbands phone number daily.... Anyway for the last several months - I've just had some arm/hand weakness and so sure enough in May I had an EMG - it was normal...just two weeks ago I had another and the Ortho agreed I had hand weakness and that he thought it seemed to come from my CNS - repeated the EMG and it was normal just as he suspected because it is in the CNS according to him. My neuro saw me and has just recently sent me to Physical Therapy. I am just starting this. Bumped into my neuro today as I was bringing coffee to my husband (another physician) with my kids and he said "yes lets do the LP and then we don't have to think about the problems anymore - we can just forget about it" He told my husband another physician - that he does not believe it will be positive for MS...my husband wants to do the LP so we don't have to wonder anymore. SO I guess it's good but why is my hand progressively getting worse??? On top of it now I'm stressed out about the LP - I've had epidurals and I can't stand the feeling. YUCK!

Hi meeshkap,

Sounds like you have had a long journey already.  An LP is often used to help diagnose MS when the MRI evidence is not conclusive.  For me, the LP results (positive for oligoclonal bands which are evidence of demyelination) got me one step closer to a diagnosis but wasn't quite enough to make it official in 2005 (according to the criteria at the time).  My MRIs showed one lesion which was very slightly enhancing the month before the LP.  A month of the LP, two new lesions were seen on MRI and although they were non-enhancing, I was dx with MS.

I would think that having the LP is a good idea at this point.  Otherwise, what was the explanation given for your lesions?  Remember to drink lots of fluid before and after the LP, lay still for at least an hour afterwards and no strenuous activity for 24 hours.

Good luck,

Lisa

Hi Lisa,

The LP came back with 0 bands.  so I guess that would make me clear of MS...however I am still in physical therapy trying to get my 4th and 5th fingers on my left hand stronger since those fingers have gone very weak and turn outs I have no pinched nerves - I had an EMG in May when i first felt it come on - then another EMG last month when it got worse right before i got the flu.... and that EMG was no different. The ortho guy thinks it is a CNS problem...  hmm. who knows. I had another MRI but all of my lesions are unchanged. The neuro in town thinks I do not have MS but the MS specialist thinks I need to be watched for 5 years. Right now I am trying to make some changes in  my life to destress and I hope that will give me some health changes.... I feel that it is not all stress though and Seattle MS specialist doesn't think it is stress....I have no idea what to think or feel some days. I know that today I feel exhausted and have no reason to feel this way. I have done some running around  - taking kids to school and groceries but nothing major.  ugh!
