MS Cognitive Dysfunction and Social Security Disability Process
I work for a federal agency. My job responsibilities require keen memory and recall in order to complete my job tasks. For several months, I have experienced difficulty with the following:
- Attention
- Memory
- Thinking Speed
- Executive Functioning (planning and judgment)
My job performance had significantly decreased and I am struggling. I realize that I cannot do my job. I have applied for SSI-DA and Retirement Disability. My treating physicians are supporting my decision. The application process seems so intimidating because of my memory. Can anyone offer advice with this process?
HI MONICA,
FIRST OFF, LET ME SAY HOW SORRY I AM THAT YOU'RE HAVING PROBLEMS W/YOUR WORK. AND W/THAT BEING SAID, YOU ARE CORRECT IN SAYING IT'S INTIMIDATING. PLUS A FEW MORE WORDS THAT I CAN'T PRINT HERE, LOL.
ONE OF THE BEST THINGS I THINK YOU COULD DO, IS SIT DOWN W/A FAMILY MEMBER OR TRUSTED FRIEND AND LET THEM FILL IT OUT FOR YOU, BASED ON YOUR ANSWERS.
THIS ADVICE WAS TOLD TO ME BY MY ATT'Y-NEVER FILL IT OUT YOURSELF! IT'S A DEAD GIVE-AWAY THAT YOU CAN WORK, SO THEREFORE DISABILITY WILL BE DENIED.
AND BE VERY EXPLICIT WITH YOUR ANWERS: I.E. IF YOU HAVE TO BEND OVER, THEN TELL THEM WHAT EFFECT THIS HAS ON YOUR LEGS, AND BACK. DO THIS WITH EVERY QUESTION YOU HAVE TO ANSWER, TOO.
IT'S DEFINITELY A TIME CONSUMING TASK TO DO, BUT IN THE END IT WILL BE WORTH IT.
GOOD LUCK!
GENTLE
