Q: Yawning!

I was diagnosed in April of 09, and soon after that I started yawning every time I spoke for any length of time, and my voice would lose it's strength and go hoarse.  Is this MS?  How can I stop yawning, I am in outside sales and this has become an embarrassment!

Hi MonicaLinda,

Honestly, I had not heard of yawning as being associated with MS.  But after reading your question I googled "yawning multiple sclerosis" and found some references.  Very interesting.  Apparently it is common in MS and could be associated with thermoregulation of the brain (cooling the brain), stretching and filling the lungs if muscles are a bit weakened, as a side-effect of some medications, or as a part of speech dysfunction.

What you are experiencing with your voice could certainly be caused by the MS as dysarthria or dysphonia.  See How to Manage MS-related Dysarthria (Speech Dysfunction).  These are things to definitely discuss with your neurologist.  Good luck.
