Q: My Husband has Multiple Sclerosis for about 9 years now. All in all he is doing well but, Sex can sometimes leave me upset. We can have a great night of passion one night but if we try again the

next night he can not seem to keep an erection. If he does keep the erection he can not ejaculate. A lot of the time I feel like it me. Like I'm doing something wrong. He said its just the way it is. Although he can maintain an erection if he does it manually to himself. I need to know is this normal? The only drugs he is on is Tysaberi and Lexapro 10mg

Hi Marie,

Welcome to MS HealthCentral.  As I've been going through questions and posts this morning, I see that you have already jumped right on in and have been helping others.  Thank you so much for this!!  It is what makes our community great.

Now let's jump into the topic at hand - Sex and MS.  I wrote a serious of posts last year on this very subject.  Let me guide you to the last one in the series and you can go back and read the others - Multiple Sclerosis: Sex Toys, Tips, and Tools.

Sexual difficulties and dysfunction can be a common occurrence with MS.  As you know, this can be extraordinarily frustrating for either partner in the relationship.  Fortunately there are things which can be tried to help improve sexual relations.  And more is available to help men who have trouble having and maintaining an erection (than for women with similar problems).

Definitely try to talk with your husband about your concerns, both for your relationship and for improving your sex life.  Don't be shy at the doctor's office.  A neurologist may not ask about sexual dysfunction, but he/she should!!

I hope that you might find some helpful information in the series on Sex and MS.  Please let me know if there are any questions regarding the information.

Lisa
