Thursday, March 19, 2009 Chocolate! asks

Q: When do you take No for an answer? I don't want to be labeled as crazy!

I have lots of MS symptoms and an MRI that may indicate MS. I saw the Neuro who was not happy that the MRI place gave me a disc and not films ( I waited 6weeks for this appt). He did ask a lot of questions but would not do more until I see him again next week with Films. I too was told that I have hypereflex's which he said he thought was interesting but he thought I was because I was nervous(which i did not feel). I keep getting pain in my forearms, hands, wrists, both sides. He told me to watch my form when typing although he must not have heard me say the pain is even when I'm doing nothing. I have tremors in my right hand that come and go throughout the day. His response when he saw it for himself was who in my family shakes(NOBODY).

I have lots of questions but the biggest is what if this Neuro sends me on my way doing nothing more then what he's already done? Do I keep going and searching for someone to help me? I know in my heart and mind something is wrong with me but I keep thinking I'll be labeled as crazy if I'm too persistent. I don't want MS but I do want an answer and I think MS is it. Also have you ever heard of easy bruising and red blotchiness to the skin as a symptom? This just started this week as well. I almost look like a have a rash and the slightest touch makes my skin bright red. I keep finding small bruises in places I've done nothing to.  Every day for the past month and a half something new starts. I was told almost 2 months ago by my pcp this was all probably just a virus but I can now recall odd things that happened to me months ago that I just ignored. Thanks for Listening! Melissa

Hi there

I think everyone who has been in the state of limbo and awaiting a diagnosis can relate to how you feel.

No you are not crazy.  You just want to know what is going on with you and to have peace of mind.  I am so sorry that your neurologist wouldn't give you anything to go on and that you have to wait again.  Be prepared as you may have more waiting if things are inconclusive.

Here is an article I wrote recently specifically for people who are in limbo of what to ask and tell your doctor.

Write down all of these symptoms you are having.  Doctors are like detectives, they want all the facts.  Remember that you are your own best advocate.  Don't let anyone including your doctor, dismiss your concerns.  You have every right to want and need to know what is going on with you.

Sometimes you do have to trust science just a bit...and wait on tests and the results.  But if you are unhappy with your doctor and you find that he isn't listening to you...you always have the option of getting a second opinion.

I wish you the best of luck with all of this.  Please do let us know what happens with you.
